I worked with a local dealership to get a JT-Rubicon from another dealer that is not so local. We had struck a deal, and they initiated the transfer. The other dealer denied the request, they wanted the other dealer to pay over MSRP, despite it being listed for sale as 4.5k under MSRP - which effectively shut my deal down. I was willing to pay the listed price.

I called the listing dealer trying to understand, and they said as much. They ran my trade in and offered me 8k under what the local dealer was willing to give me, so there's no deal there either. Is this normal? It really sends a bad message.

So, things progressed. We find another Gladiator Rubicon that has different options that I was willing to accept. I went in to sign for it, and the local dealer told me "we wont honor the trade in value we gave you, the guy who quoted you that no longer works here and I'm only willing to give you X amount." and then offered me 6k less for trade in than they had agreed to. I ended up walking away with my current truck.

What a rollover coaster of fails.

Sounds like you have a dealer you want to run (not walk) away from!

Who knows, maybe. I've never had so much trouble striking a deal. I'm thinking my issue is more the dealer than the vehicle. The last 4 vehicles I bought for my wife and I had a deal done in under 45 minutes with no issues. I'm pretty familiar with the game, so this is unreal. They put the trade in offer in writing and they wont honor it now - I've never heard of that.

Take your trade to Carmax...I got $3,000 more than my local dealer was offering in about 15 minutes at Carmax for my trade. I almost didn't go back and leave my JT on the lot, but I had ordered it and waited 4 months for it and just couldn't wait any longer.

Which dealer was this? I am in Tampa and want to stay away from that one...

I have had that happen once where they had a trade offer in writing and then boom we can't honor that I did as others have said walk away and never look back as dealers are a dime a dozen plenty to choose from since Im willing to drive where needed.

I wouldn't compromise on the JT you want just for the sake of getting a deal done. Make sure you get the jeep and options you prefer. Any reason you couldn't sell your current vehicle out-right? I know trading them in is easier, but when you trade them in, you play by their rules and the game changes, unfortunately. I had a similar situation with a dealer here in PHX, they worked a deal with me then had to work a trade with their sister dealer, which was turned down by their sister dealership. They wanted a $6K add on premium above MSRP for BS that added no value to the jeep. It's easier to walk and sleep at night than to not get what you want. Just my 2c after buying vehicles for many many years.. My final thought, Find a dealership that deserves your money. Without you .. the customer, they are just a big empty building. Let them earn your business!

I know there are still dealerships offering well below invoice deals on JT's...if you join Tread Lightly, you get 1% below invoice, no questions asked, but there is a process and you have to wait a month to use your discount. I'd try Carmax and then fly to one of the sponsor dealership on this forum and take their deal. There is a dealership local to me that was offering 6% below invoice on factory ordered JT's but I didn't see their deal until 2 months after ordering mine from the dealership I bought it from. Lucky for me, Tread Lightly was honored officially like 3 weeks before I took delivery, so I got the 1% below invoice that I was counting on. I don't trust the 6% below deals too much because they have to make $$ somewhere, so they are going to hit you at some point.

great advice here - really it comes down to timing. I need a truck, and i want a manual gladiator. So few around that i cannot easily sell my truck and wait it out. it seems like there are a lot more manuals out near CO than there are in the southeast.

That sucks. They are under no legal obligation to honor anything ..even if its in writing. Look on the fine print of your written offer. It probably has an 'out' clause. They put those in everything. Even if there is no clause, they know people aren't going to pursue legal action.

I would just keep looking at other dealers for something you like and buy from them. Something will come along eventually.

Yes a manual transmission adds a bit more complexity to it. Keep at it, you'll get exactly what you are after. Happy Jeep Hunting!

If you want a manual just custom order it. IT looks like you are not being given much off of MSRP to take what is on the lot. Options you don't want are expensive, Options you want that are missing can sometimes be costly to replace.

Im the Guy that got a Rubicon for less than most of the Sport S on the lot around here. lol
