Two issues, maybe?

So we've had big blue, as my wife has taking to calling the new jeep, for a day now. Two things I've noticed.

1. The auto start/stop doesn't work. Not a big deal, I think. I'd just assume it not function, but, being a brand new truck, it should work. My only real concern is that there is something else wrong, and this is just a symptom. Should I be worried? I'll have the dealer double check next week.

2. It's a Sport S with Max tow. When driving and I let off the gas, sometimes it feels like someone threw out an anchor. The truck doesn't stall, but slows down so much it almost feels like the brakes are on. Is this normal? It just seems weird.

1) If it's very hot where you live and the AC is on, then auto start/stop will not engage (this is one of several reasons). The AC unit needs to keep spinning. There should be a message that shows on the dashboard screen saying why the engine didn't auto stop

2) This could be the transmission learning your ways or if you have a M/T then it's you causing this

Just co-signing on what the previous poster just said. Start/Stop only works when the AC is not on. The transmission starts very aggressive on the downshifts when brand new. It softens up as it learns how you drive.

2 is normal and I love it, especially on our hills here.
1 you can scroll on the cluster display and it will tell you what's up with the ESS - battery charging, cabin heating/cooling, etc.

1. Interesting. The start/stop on the Cherokee works with the ac on. It will shut off for a while, then start back up. But it does shut off with the ac on.

2. It's not a manual (the Mustang is though, just to be clear that I'm not some non-manual driving weenie). Maybe it is just learning driving style. Weird.

Not true. It absolutely works with AC on. It depends on the temperature difference, outside temp and so on. When I come to a stop and the AC is on, if the cabin is cooled, the engine shuts off until the cabin temp rises then the engine starts again. It's based on your goal temp and actual temp inside.

Mine still holds me back on downshifting, and if I am on a hill and push the brakes to slow down it downshifts and holds the speed back for me - at 17,000 miles. Love it.
It's never softened or let up on that at all. I've seen no difference over the more than a year of ownership.

1. So does the JT. It's a matter of temperature, not what's on or not on. If you scroll the cluster display it will show is ESS is ready or not, what's up with it, etc.

2. The JT is different in that it uses engine braking more than any other truck I've owned - and it's smart about it. I love its differences.

My wife trades Grand Cherokees like every 2.5 to 3 years. Her 2018 was the first one that ever had battery issues - and she had it for 2.5+ years before those went bad. Was a first for her. The dealership said they'd had a rash of bad batteries in recent months. BOTH batteries.
I think it's more on how they have things configured, wired, sensed, than the ESS itself. It should not be hard on batteries. I suspect it's their implementation. Other vehicles use it and don't have huge issues. Chevrolet, for example, could name others, have used it for years without major problems. As they say - "only in a Jeep" LOL

1.) Yes, if the temperature differential between outside and inside is >X then the ESS will not kick in. No I do not know the value of X, and the differential goes either way, heat or lack there of.

Max AC then. I don't use the thermostat. When Max AC is on, Start/Stop does not function. That's straight out of the owner's manual.

You leave it on max AC all the time? And it gets down to what, 55 degrees or so?
I've never known of anyone to set to max and just leave it there.
I was just there -Colorado Springs, it was in the 90s and we never needed anything other than AC set to about 68 degrees
....................although my wife sometimes bumps it down to 66. (and doesn't generally wear much of a coat in the winter)
Here it was 100 for a couple of days - still set it on auto, set the temps (both sides) to 68 and it got plain chilly in there after while.

It's doesn't get down to 55. I've lived in TX for the first 31 years of my life and I've lived in CO for 17. It does get hot here.
