After purchasing my latest Gladiator at a different dealership, I had been looking for something for my son. I'm at a local dealership test driving a used Ram and talking about my recent Gladiator purchase. Sales guy (who had obviously been selling for a little while according to some pins or some such he'd garnered as a sales guy), proceeded to tell me that my Mojave was an "appearance package". I almost choked.

Yes, I set him straight. Not intending to be rude, I told him flat out that no sir, you are absolutely incorrect, and then proceeded to tell the SALES GUY at the dealership what the difference was. I used to sell CJD back in the day. Guarandamntee you I could tell you the difference in the Jeep models, and everything else for that matter. Was seriously dumbfounded. The confidence he had when telling me that... Honestly was flipping shocked. An appearance package indeed...

Most salespeople don’t research what different packages for different vehicles… hell on the new bronco theres how many different packages with different add ons and that’s one vehicle now multiply that onto every manufacturer and vehicle they make…. It’s mind boggling… I usually just nod and go uhuh really? And let them decide if they want to go down the rabbits hole of research.

The scary part of this is that some salespeople are so clueless that they'll assume that every Jeep (or whatever vehicle) on the lot has all the advertised features regardless of the package or accessories.

Several years ago I bought a two year old Buick Enclave for my work car at the Buick dealership. The sales guy told me quite gleefully that it had a 4,000 lb towing capacity, which would have been true if it were the current year model with that particular highest trim package. It was neither, and I had to explain to him that my towing capacity was 2,500 lbs.

He’s probably just a Rubicon guy.

Sales people “sometimes” only know a little about every vehicle for sale.
Whereas model specific shoppers know just about everything thanks to the internet.
So to the salesman that said the Mojave was an appearance package, well he was right, because to him it did ‘appear’ different.:CWL:

I remember the salesman when I bought mine. This Gladiator over here comes with 4 wheel drive, it was a Willys. Nah, I kinda had my eye on a 2wd Rubicon, got any of those? He looked for one.

I have seen some doozies that tell some whoppers. Heck sometimes I am in disbelief of people that believe the salespeople. For 12 years I worked for Lo/Jack stolen vehicle recovery systems. I started as an installation tech then finished up my last few years as an ops manager.
New Orleans was my primary area although I worked all over the SE US. The New Orleans area had the type of salespeople and dealers that would lie their A$$s off to make a sale. One of the dealers was Veterans Ford on Veterans Blvd . They took a brand new 2005 plain V6 Mustang and F150 off the lot. They had leather seat covers embroidered and vinyl side and hood lettering that said Veterans Ford Limited Edition.
I am like what the h ????? Nobody will every buy those. Well I was wrong. 3 weeks later I am installing a Lo/Jack tracking unit on the Mustang and the Truck at the same house. I had to listen to the customer go on and on for 30 minutes about how rare the vehicles were and that they were both tuned to produce over 800 HP. I was like wow really? How do they make that kind of power? Oh it's chipped man and they hide a turbo charger in the muffler. YEA OK I need to get your trackers installed and get on the road.

My salesman didn't know the difference between the Rubicon and the Mojave.
My sales guy could tell you every difference off the top of his head without looking anything up or pulling out a sales pamphlet. He knew dimensions, the Rubicon differences and features, where the wires were for aux switches and which ones did what, how to program and use them (wish I had bought them with my truck) - and that's the only reason I went over to that store and bought from him - because HE had been to classes and knew his Jeeps inside and out. He knew ratios, axles, tow package differences, and more. I asked why out of the 3 places I'd visited he was the only one that could tell anything at all about the Gladiator.
He explained that he went to classes put on by Jeep on the features and selling them - he said it was out of pocket and he paid, and few others ever went to the classes.
I hated their sales tactics (I have to go check with my manager) and other BS stuff, but he'd been there about 15 years at that point, paid to go to classes and couldn't help how his boss insisted on doing things. It's not up to the sales people - it's management.

So if your sales guy thinks the Mojave is an appearance package, not so sure I'd reward him with a purchase.

Good grief, all they have to do is Google "Jeep Gladiator Mojave" and they'll have an hour's worth of reading at the very least, much of it from FCA/Jeep themselves, so it's authoritative information, not from some rag/blog/wannabe.

I sold Jeeps years ago (2007-2008). I did well because the competition was so bad. I couldn’t tell you how many customers left, because I was never high pressure, and came back after dealing with some shitty, high pressure sales person and would say basically verbatim “I want the Jeep, but I’ll never deal with [that guy] again.”

I actually sold Jeeps for a lot longer than that, but behind the scenes running internet depts so I didn’t have a lot of customer interactions.

My sales guy told me my 6MT could tow 7,000# ? yeah, uhh, why don’t you just get the paperwork together and stop talking.

That’s actually a pretty big liability. They should really STFU about tow ratings and pay loads if they don’t know. I’ve heard that some dealerships don’t get into it and refer to charts so there aren’t ever any misunderstandings. Given your average Jeep saleperson.

Don’t get me wrong, I worked in high line for most of my car sales career and worked with many very well educated, professional, and talented sales people. The Jeep/Chrysler brand just seems to attract some of the worst.

Guess I shouldn't be, but I'm a little shocked the sales folks have to pay out of pocket for classes. We were forced to go, whether we liked it or not. 2003 - 2008 for me. Gotta be terribly difficult to up-sell from a Sport to a Mojave or Rubi. $15k appearance package!! That's some fancy stickers on that hood!

Current purchase was used, and they had what we wanted, or I may have gone elsewhere.

This guy was your stereotypical sales guy. He didn’t have a clue. I’ve shared the story on other threads as a warning to people that they shouldn’t always trust everything the salesperson tells them. Recently a guy on here said he got a manual max tow. I feel bad for him if that’s what he thought he was buying.
