Do you want the 8.4 screen with premium audio package? If so just pick between Rubicon and Mojave. The prices for a loaded up Rub or Moj are not that much higher than a loaded up willys or even a loaded Maxtow S.

If you care less about interior goodies stick with S/Willys
I have the 8.4 with premium sound in my Willys. Couldn’t care less about leather, esp when I have the top off all the time.

What’s your budget @mpovolo ? That will help to answer a lot of your questions.

Thanks everyone,

I was trying to stay around 65K Canadian, all the nicely loaded Rubicons are around 74K

I have a rubicon, 4:10 will kill your gas mileage, at nearly $2.00/L I’d get a Sport or a Wlily’s and if you want leather you can get factory katskinz, or you can order them and install the leather yourself. Unless you absolutely need to tow massive weight. Now if you plan on going to 35’s you’ll end up close to 3:73

Thanks for the point on gas mileage, did not realize that. I didn't quite understand when you said get 35s. To be honest not sure I will ever get bigger tires but would hate to limit myself 2 years from now. What do you mean by get close 3:73
thanks

For the light trailer towing you initially spoke of and tire upgrade, I'd recommend that you look strongly at the Mojave, Rubicon or “Willys” (no apostrophe s, because it’s based off the name Willys as in “What ya be talking about Willys?” - 80’s sitcom Different Strokes). If either of those have a desirable tire size and look, you will likely be money ahead if you just buy it already “all done up”. Then, you’ll have an easier time valuing it down the road if you change your mind. I’d say 4 wheeling is one of those things like playing tennis or mountain biking. You have to have the right tools play and if you start out with a good set of gear, then you’ll likely enjoy your play that much more. I personally have a Mojave for the reasons that I’d prefer more of a go faster back country type of 4wd than go slower over difficult rocked terrain type of 4wd.

Reading that you’re on a budget and your initial Canadian pricing concerns, I’d recommend getting a Willys with Max Tow, cloth, gas 3.6, auto, with Aux switches (cheap just in case), auto start (Canadian winters) with your choice of top as something over bare bones, but not fully option listed out. Then, just have fun with it.

You may find that your dealers are optioning them out with a bunch of “frills” that you don’t care to pay for. Then, just order and wait. If you order, you should be able to negotiate a stronger deal. I think such a model would be a good midrange Jeep truck that would easily sell in the secondary market if you change you mind on a Jeep or wish to upgrade.

Reading you question about gearing helps me realize that you’re very new to this. That’s ok, and it’s good to ask those questions, but part of what you seek may not be fully understood until you just immerse yourself into the experience.

Best of luck! My $.02’s.

As you increase tire diameter you affect the gear ratio, factory tires are about 32” diameter so when you go up to 35’s you’ve added almost 3” of diameter changing the effective ratio. So a 4:10 on 32’s gives you an effective gear ratio of 3:73 when you mount 35’s this is all loose math so people might correct me. But the general point is that your effective gear ratio changes.

Willys with 8.4 and hardtop 49255
Mojave with hardtop 51710 (no leather, not sure why you mentioned that at all as leather is optional on willys and mojave and rubicon)

Price difference? $2455. after discounts that most of us are getting? Around $2200. Willys 8.4 to Rubicon would be about 1800 price difference after dealer discount.

I think that's a no brainer. Bigger wheels, 4.10s, better suspension, nicer hood, high line flares, rear locker. And that's just the bonuses the Mojave and Rubicon share, there's plenty more to differentiate between the 2.

You mentioned interior goodies, so I mentioned leather. Not sure what other interior goodies you could have meant? Maybe the pricing and models are diff in the states. I did Willys w/ cold weather, aux switch, premium sound (8.4), tow package and premium softop. MRSP was $59,xxx. Paid $54,xxx . Couldn't get a RUBI for close to that.

Posted started price in Canada (manual trans). Mojave same price as Rubi:

If you order in, I think you can prob do a Rubi depending on options. What dealer are you talking to? I found no one could beat Peel.

Your willys as spec'd prices out at 60,990CAD on jeep.ca
A rubicon with the same features on jeep.ca 63,335CAD

That's a $2345CAD difference to go from a willys to a rubicon. which is about 1863USD. in the US the price differential is 2100 on the MSRP so it's actually cheaper to upgrade in Canada than here in the states.

That's also before your discount. You said you paid about 10% off MSRP, so you'd pay about 10% of the price difference. meaning you could have had a rubicon with all the same features (and more) for about 2100CAD.

Long story short, if you don't have a VIN yet, call your dealer ASAP

Dang. That ain't bad. Mind you, I would never use the Rubi to it's full potential. The Willys does me just fine. Cheers.

Wrong. 7000 on Rubicon Automatic. Maybe they need to update the manual. It's been 7k at least since the 2021s @Elff build sheet shows even more, but I don't know what his configuration is exactly. I know it's an auto Rubi.
Correct. 2021 Rubicon auto pulls 7k.

If you’re fine with the 6k towing on a Willy’s, and you won’t use lockers, you’ll do fine. If you upgrade to bigger tires in the future like 35 or 37”, you’d even likely regear your rubicon with 4.10s. My rubicon is now on 5.13. You’d love the Willy’s look and feel, and it would upgrade fine. Lockers would be the big thing, but if you won’t use them

I will say, we got our rubi for the 7k towing, but quickly realized it’s an off-road demon. I’m addicted now, and would have spent more upgrading the Willy’s to this point.

This is why I really want to stop myself at 35s to stick with the 4.10s. my love for the stock mojave wheels will help keep me on 35x11.5s hopefully. But who knows, I'm not sizing up til my OEMs wear out.
