If you are getting 13.9 volts then the alternator is charging.

I suspect its a battery. Though it could be either or both for all I know.

Just started it again and had “service ess system,” which I believe was the same message I got before the last aux batt was changed. I’m at 36600 miles would that be part of the power train warranty ? Can it be bypassed? Thanks

I think the batteries are covered under the 3/36 warranty. If you are on the original main battery, I would go to Costco and get a replacement Group 94R (H7) battery, and then go to Advanced Auto Parts and get a Group 400 (AUX14) to replace the ESS battery.

Thanks , got an appointment at dealer at 9 tomorrow. I'll pay for the diagnostic but if parts not covered I'll do as you suggest.

There should not be a diagnostic fee, unless they find something that is not covered by warranty.

As someone who has worked as a service writer I can tell you that if someone showed up with a problem like that only 600 miles out of warranty. We would work with the auto maker to get it covered.

Its a good will thing. Especialy since you've already had trouble with this system and they maybe should have replaced both batteries when they replaced your Aux batt.

Well they didn't cover it and charged me a diagnostic fee of $62.00. Then told me that everything checked out, fine except for multiple cel
For low voltage. Said they would gladly change both batteries at my expense. I left and went to Advance Auto and replaced the main battery with a H7 AGM

I have had this exact issue sporadically since this winter with my 21 Willys Sport, I finally brought it in and they determined the alternator is at fault (240 amp) with a voltage issue.

Odd. Did you ever use the voltage gauge in the cluster or off road pages to see what it was doing while driving it?
The battery started it, and ye the alternator was the problem - odd.
I wonder if they checked the system for battery state of charge.

Depends on the battery state as these take more voltage to start a charge if they are down very far - over 14 volts, some take almost 15.

On start messages about not in park, antilock brakes, auto start stop unavailable, no radio or heater.

The lower right isn't ABS, it's auto stop/start. The battery of course is obvious.
But this from an FCA diagnostic bulletin says "it's a charging system issue", so........
