I really don't quite get the need to have the phone in view and readily accessible unless you're using it to record video?
I keep a cable plugged into the USB c in the console and plug the phone in as soon as I get in. Android Auto takes care of maps (Waze), music (Auri), and if I need to text or talk I either tap the screen or say, "Hey Google".
I've used it for years on other vehicles and have become very accustomed to it.
So where is the phone, then? You say you have a cable plugged into the USB C in the console, then where's the phone?
(I haven't use the USB slot inside the console in months - too much stuff in the console to get to it. My wife wanted to put a kitchen sink in there but we ran out of room)

I gave up on CarPlay. The connection in my center console constantly disconnects on me, and I can't stand having the wire coming from the media port on the dash. I used my phone mainly for navigation, so instead of running it through the head unit, I just mounted it up on the dash with a 67 designs ball mount and arm, a MagSafe mount, and ran a USB up to the cubby in the top of the dash. Now I just hop in the Jeep, slap the phone on the mount, and it's ready to go.

The wired connection kept dropping from Carplay? Do you think its the car, Carplay, phone, etc?

Could be as simple as the cable. I've seen weird things with a less than perfect cable - they'll work every place else but can't handle the load of these things.

I'm pretty sure it is the wiring in the Jeep. This has been a fairly common problem on the JL forum as well. I was able to limit it disconnecting on me by making sure the fuses for the USB were seated properly, but it is starting to creep up again. It's not the lightning/USB wire - I've used a bunch of different wires (from Apple, Belkin, Amazon, etc), and always had the same problem. Asked the dealership about it, and they just basically shrugged.

Like I said, I'm done trying to chase it down, and since I only use CarPlay to push navigation to the dash, I can accomplish the same thing with just the phone screen. Also, that mount location is the perfect height to catch videos using the phone. I'm trying out various dash cam apps to see if any are worth using.

I have a good amount of 67 Design stuff and have ordered the drivers side mount. My last Jeep and F150 both had cables run behind the radio and out the top of the dash that I could use for AA, I wanted to kill that with either wireless or some other way. I guess I will start testing the USB in the center console to see how much of a pain it wants to be.

I’ve gotten dropped quite a bit from Apple CarPlay in the console. I switched to a new lightning to USB-c and started using the smaller port in media hub in the dash. It’s not my favorite (worried about breaking that small door off someday), but I haven’t lost connection since ?‍♂

I did the same thing. It was a lot more stable, but it still blipped out on me fairly routinely. By that I mean the screen would flash off car play for just long enough to get my attention, but would be connected back by the time I actually looked at it. This was more distracting than anything else, so that's when I decided to just use the phone.

In every Jeep I've owned, I have run a USB directly from the head unit up to the cubby on the top of the dash for my phone. Unfortunately, with the new UConnect systems, there isn't an obvious USB input on the back of the device. So I tapped into the 12v outlet and put in a 2 USB port on the dash. Cable from the mount plugs directly into that. So I can get power to mine, but no CarPlay/Android Auto.
