If that's an issue, put the spare on the front and keep it in 2WD. Not everyone puts large tires on their Jeep.
The situation where I'm most likely to need a spare is a situation where 2wd isn't going to work.

Don't you have to do that anyway? The sapre tire is a matching spare, the wheel just doesn't match. And when I put new tires on, I got a new spare tire too, since the size was different. When it's time to put new tires on the JK, wheel have to get 5, because the spare is now 7 years old (PO didn't do a 5 tire rotation, and it's the original tire).
I buy four tires at a time. I've never replaced the tire on a spare wheel. I've also never had a vehicle with a visible spare.

If it was a donut, or some kind of true temporary spare, I'd do the same. But it just seems like a waste for a full size real tire to just let it rot under the vehicle to me. I'd also hate to a have to rely on it in several years, only to find that it's not roadworthy any more.

Mine's still non-matching for now though. The tire matches, but the wheel doesn't, so I don't rotate it

Then you have to plan for that in your travels. It is not the same for all. My four tire method has served me well for over forty years, but it's not for everyone.

If you actually want to be able to use your spare to drive out of somewhere, you need the same size to not wreck your expensive gears. I’d love to see someone drive out with a 33 spare on one side and a 35 or 37 on the other and not break something way more expensive than a tire.
This would only be an issue if you had the diff locked the whole time. With open diffs, wheels are allowed to spin at different speeds. Put the smaller tire up front and only lock the rear.

Agree. Definitely depends on your usage case. In regular cars, I never replace the temporary spare. But since I do sometimes use this vehicle for trail rides, I don't want to be stuck somewhere.

For on road use, sure. For off-road tire changes, you’re now forced to use 2wd to exit a difficult trail. And with two tire sizes in front. Not worth saving a few hundred dollars. Find a nice buy 3 or 4 get one free sale.

I rolled on a 305/65R17 (33”) on the front right and 35x12.5R17 on the other three about 25 miles till I could get back and plug the flat I got.

Spare was max inflation, my 35s aired down to -24.

It was up in West Fork (due East of ridge way, co) drove east almost to cimmaron.

No issues.
Kept it in 2wd, only used 4wd in a few spots.

It’s more of an issue/big deal in an AWD vehicle.

IMO, a 33 to 35 isn’t huge.

I’d perhaps do things different if I were going from 33s to 37s.

Once my 35s are worn out, I’ll go 37s and put the best 35 as the spare.

I just went through kind of the same today. Willys had steel wheel with a FD 255/75/17 for a spare, big center hole. I put a premium wheel back under it for a spare with upgrade size tire. If the winch bracket would have had another coat of paint on it, it would not of fit. It went through with a little bit of coaxing but was a tight fit.

I see your point, and varying the inflation is certainly a way to compensate. The types of trails I’m on require 4L and I’m not going to reduce capability or control to save $350 on a tire. That’s just me. I’m running stock wheels so it’s just the tire cost. To each their own though.

Hey everyone I just picked up Mammoth charcoal rims and love them on the gladiator… good price too! One issue, the underneath carrier mounting point is too large to go through the center for the spare tire. I was going to pick up a factory steel wheel and hold onto it as I am upgrading tires once the lift is in but then I really can not do the 5 tire rotation. Is there a smaller center tab (sorry for terrible terminology) that I can put underneath? I bought 5 rims and would like to keep it underneath as I do use my bed. Boring the center would cause the same 5 rotation issues. Regardless I love the rims wanted to get away from black and I have not seen these on many gladiators. Probably great on wranglers since the spare is a bolt on.

Apologies if I missed it, but what model are these? I’ve checked out a bunch of Mammoth wheels, but haven’t seen ones identical to these.

I REALLY like the TJ Rubicon wheels. These look very similar to those, with the exception of the color (these are better, in my opinion).

Edit: Moab, lol. That makes sense. For some reason, the picture didn’t pop-up on the main wheel view pagez

Thought about grinding down the tabs on the winch plate to fit through the hub bore?

Update everyone…. The installer is just a D-bag I measured and it fits perfectly. No wonder rim manufacturer never heard of this.

Likely they didn't slide the plate up the cable to get more movement through the wheel.
