Riding through back country roads around 1968 in an old Willys with a wild driving teenager at the wheel who owned it when I went to visit my cousin for a week the summer of eighth grade.
Success!
The zip tie trick, courtesy @ChrisNLA, works even better than if all the nylon packing straps were still on the compressed shocks when I opened the boxes from Extreme Terrain, because the shocks were still several inches longer compressed than they needed to be.
Measure from center of...
Thanks. I tried that. Even with a hydraulic floor jack Iām not strong enough to get them off the jack and into place once compressed.
Iām 70 and my old shoulders canāt stand what they could when I wrenched as a teen at Sears in the 70ās. Iām going to default to the tie strap solution...
Outtanding. I keep shorter ones in the saddle bags of my bike. Iāll head over to Harbor Freight now. Two 36ā zip ties will be long enough.
Thanks much!
2025 Rubicon JT
I just received four new Bilstein 5100ās from Extreme Terrain. Boxes had been opened, no sweat, theyāre just shocks, but three of the four nylon tie straps were missing that keep the shocks compressed for installation. Iām doing this on the garage floor.
Thanks in advance.
I had mentioned up thread that I had been running 35 PSI cold in my Wild Peaks. And it was suggested to air them down.
I just checked the plate in the driver door jam and it specs 37 PSI, front and rear. I aired them down yesterday. Not sure how accurate this Jeepās TPMS is. I have a tire gauge...
I figure tires, shocks, and springs are what differentiate the ride of a Rubicon, over the ā24 Sport S that I had. I was going to swap tires, but someone suggested Bilstien shocks.
I guess the $64,000 question remains, what can be done, within reason, to improve the road manners of a new...
Because someone recommended them up thread. Way cheaper than a set of new Michelin LTXās I was angling for. Maybe this is the wrong approach?
Weāll see. Nothing done that canāt be undone if I donāt like them.
This Jeep will become the hobby that my bikes have been up till now. Iāve bought four...
For the naysayer up thread.
Flaps keep all the schmutz off the side of the Jeep. With al the road construction and development going on around my area my JT would look like crap with red clay mud all over the sides without at least front mud flaps, even if I never left the pavement.
@BCB Turns out Rock Auto has the Bilstein 5100ās for $99 each. You pay some shipping, but still the better deal than Extreme Terrain where I just ordered last night.
And a good thread that I didnāt see till just now.
I ordered Bilstein B8-5100 for 0-1.5ā lift, for 2025 JT Rubicon.
Front part # 33-304847
Rear part # 33-304854
They have several other flavors of the B8-5100 for taller lifts. Iām not lifting mine as its just a firewood hauler sometimes, and grocery getter all the time. I have had it on the...
Aired down the tires. Definite improvement.
Read reviews on the Bilsteins. All good. Ordered a set. Theyāll be here before the new exhaust I ordered on Friday night for my Road King arrives next week. š
Internet, bourbon, and credit cards.
Keeping the aftermarket humming for years to come.
This is the Wild Peak A/T 285 70 17 that came on the Rubicon. Iāve been running 35PSI cold, and I think Iām going to air down to 30lbs before I do anything else.
And this is what came on the Sport S. I believe they were 245 70 17 all season. They were just basic light truck tires. Iām pretty...
Their level 2 shocks (base level I believe) list for half the price of those Michelin tires I referenced. I wonder if Iād be better served installing a set of the Bilsteins first.
ETA - The level 2 shocks also appear to be the only ones for a zero lift, which mine is, and I donāt plan to...
