It's simply computer stuff. I had a Renegade and it had the "modes" for driving. It defaulted to the "auto" mode which was simply so Jeep could maximize CAFE readouts. Everyone complained about the Renegades and how they drove primarily because of Auto. But the Sand Mode made it entirely...

You can flip em forward so they are parallel to the seat bottoms and that helps, or you can just do a seat delete.
