Plug all the components in and press the button that would mount to the dash. The dial/button on the dash doesn't have to be installed for you to press the button.

Correct. You don't need to bolt it all in. Connecting the wiring should be sufficient.

I dont think it is related to trailer weight. Many of us with the issue see it with and without a trailer attached.

Maybe not...I pressed the button while driving and had the same issue as you. Guess I need to go update my post. When I hit the button idling in my driveway it didnt do anything earlier today.
