Not so sure about power, but as far as reliability the old Ford 4.9 I6 was about as bulletproof as they come
I'd LS 5.3L swap everything if I could.

Wouldn't pull much better but it sound better while riding the struggle bus 🤣

I never understood the "slight" increase swaps. If I'm spending all that time and/or money, I want the thing to feel like an entirely different rig. If I'm going Chevy power is LX3 minimum. Odds are the JT will end up with a 392, but the lx3 is possible. Why add 100ftlbs for all that cost when I can add nearly 300?

To clarify* I would not do that on my Gladiator.

Every other pile that would accept a V8 that doesn't have one, in a driveway swap, sure why not.

An older 5.3L like my other truck has is a 285HP/330TQ engine, but readily available, dirt cheap.

I'd 5.7/6.4 swap my Gladiator if I had the money, either one being quite a step up. Even 5.7 setup they use for the swaps is a substantial increase.

I miss the 5.7L in my rebel I had before the JT, but if I'm spending $32k at AMW, I'll pick up a few more weekends at work and spend $38k. 425hp would be great, but 505 would be better.

I'm just modest lol.

Truck would never be sitting on tires taller than 33s, don't need gobs of power.

$6K would finish a lot of projects at the house.

I'm salary - no amount of work is getting me any extra money 😂

I'm a union electrician, weekends are double time... in the highest paid local in the nation. I still say no 90% of the time though🤣

Up until last year I was hourly, and especially when I was in production OT was as much as you could stand.

Lowly old sales now. Office and a window. No OT.

But a lot of other freedoms so I guess it's a balance... 🤣

For well under 10K I can up the HP in my car to 450. With another engine I have, 550-600. So why spend all that money doing it to a JT with the weak points still being in it? If I'm going that sort of power, I'll put it where it would be more fun and a whole lot CHEAPER.

I don't know if you've bombed across the desert, but in my experience 500hp in the dirt is way more exciting and fun than 500hp on the street or even strip. A light track car at that power level would be as much fun, but that's a different animal and far from cheap or practical. For a street/ strip car to be a much fun as the JT in the dirt with 500hp I'd need to be closer to 1,000hp personally. I still couldn't justify doing it when it's lower mileage. When it's pushing 100-150k miles and the trade in value is low anyway, a huge bump in power from a new engine and trans all under warranty is far cheaper than a new truck. At that point it would be well worth it to me, assuming a 400+hp version still isn't available from the factory. I don't have money to burn, but do well enough that we can make it work when it makes sense for our use. The JT has been THE work truck building our off grid property AND it's one of our hobby vehicles blasting across the desert, exploring old mines, camping, roadtripping, and wheeling. There's no other vehicle I'd even consider replacing it with for what we do, so why not give it the power that would make it more fun and more functional in all of those scenarios? I'm not saying the swap makes sense for everyone, or even that the JT needs it for my use, but it would be a better truck with it.

My car already has 400HP.

Truth be told, I've begun to find the car life boring. The car can't do anything for me of use other than carry me to work and back. I left it at my moms house in case she needs a spare ride (her daily is sitting at 254K miles and tends to have some quirks...).

I quit going to Camaro Fest and car shows. Nothing but sitting in hot parking lots, and just never found drag racing to be terribly entertaining.

Not sure what weak points the JT has. All of the big engine swaps include a heavier duty variant of the transmission. In my case, I'm not going to suddenly start spitting out transfer cases and Dana 44's on 33s just because I have a little more horsepower to drag my tractor around with.

This is my thing. I talk shit about getting a different brand truck for some other comforts and a power bump, but the Gladiator scratches so many itches. Mine is always working. Bed is always full, trailer is on every weekend. It's carting my ass to work 70 miles round trip, etc. Then it can go offroad, the aftermarket is bottomless, etc.

I tell my fiance its like a mildly toxic relationship. There is stuff I don't like about it, stuff it doesn't do right, it likes to screw me over sooner than it should - but man when things are good, they're GOOD.

Let's just move it off the dead bottom in terms of power in the midsize category 🤣

It sounds like you need some Road Course racing in your life.

I did an HPDE day in Kentucky and loved it. It was at the NCM road course across from the Corvette Museum. I also have spend quite a bit of time doing iRacing in my home brew sim, etc. I get realllyyyyy into that.

My Camaro SS is an auto and isn't really ideal for road racing - BUT, there is a very active SCCA club that does auto cross every month just southwest of New Orleans (about a 90 minute drive for me). I've been meaning to go down and check that out. The car would be great (good enough) for that.

It are fun. Haven’t done any in years but used to a lot when I was in Japan. They had some great road courses on the mainland and a lot of great togue running down the mountain roads. Saw a lot of craziness but had a lot of fun too. I stick to my slow crawling these days but grateful I had the experience.
