June Trail of the Month Report!
Saturday the 15th was the Red Rock 4-Wheelers Trail of the Month for June. Fifteen Wranglers, Gladiators, a Bronco and a Tonka Truck showed up for the day’s festivities. The adventure for the day was the Eva Conover Trail to Coal Wash and back out via The Devil’s Racetrack. The location of these trails are 40 miles west of Green River, Utah.
The group was led by Brett Davis who ended up doing a bit more than leading this day, but that’s another story. The day started out under blue skies and comfortable temps at elevation for this time of year here in Utah. The scenery as usual was spectacular.
We also had our first arch sighting early on...
As we dropped into the Coal Wash one of our participants felt the need to test the Off-Road+ abilities of his shiny Gladiator. Needless to say this is when Brett and other participants were able to field test their recovery gear and most of all their own recovery skills. Two winches, a bit of spotting and the Gladiator was freed from its precarious perch. We were informed the trail pages indicated a mid-20 degree lean so he had plenty of room to spare before we would have been subject to a stern talking to by his significant other.
After the recovery we continued on to Bullock Draw and South Coal Wash. We made time for a lunch break. A large sandstone overhang provided shade over lunch and fellowship.
After lunch we continued on to the North Fork Coal Wash as we made our way up to the Devil’s Racetrack.
It was then on to the Racetrack and more adventure. Once again the views were more than words can say. I shall let the pictures speak for themselves.
Then on to the obstacles everyone couldn’t wait to get to. The first was this set of steps. A few vehicles were able to test out their skid plates and armour.
Then on to the razorback section. Most of our vehicles handled this section with ease and aplomb.
But did I tell you we had a Tonka Truck along? We didn’t have a ruler amongst us, this we did determine this rock outcrop is about 2 inches taller than the clearance of a Tonka Truck with 40s at full droop. We have pixilated the said vehicle to protect his pride when he is seen in public after this.
Adam was pulled off the outcrop and the Tonka Truck soldiered on. We enjoyed more grand vistas as we exited the Devil’s Racetrack.
We ended up just north of I-70 and we able to cruise along these incredible formations.
We ended up at a rock art panel and also the home of the largest Claret Cup Cactus your reporter has seen.
We parted ways as we reentered the interstate, part of the group heading back up SLC way and the rest of the group on to Ray’s in Green River for a well earned hamburger and fries after full day on the day. We shall see who braves the heat for July’s Trail of the Month!
