Has anyone had their transfer case/shifter linkage removed and noticed how the 4wd shifter nanny detent works?

I assume there is some solenoid that actuates to prevent you from shifting into 4L under certain conditions or vise versa, preventing you from shifting out of 4L when on uneven ground ect....

I would think this device interacts with the transfer case lever and is not internal in the transfer case, since a select a trac transfer case is a pretty simple thing.

Looked through Jscan but didn't see anything so far that disables this nanny.

I am a bit old school and would like to determine when and how to use my 4wd and not have a computer second guess me.

Now this I was not aware of.........

I shift the t-case into neutral a lot on modern vehicles as allowed so that I can work on the drivetrain/brakes without the ignition being on (most don't allow transmission neutral/key off anymore).

Too many nannies! My buddy was on a trail last year in his JL where the t-case gear position sensor failed and he lost the FAD and e-locker functions effectively reverting him back to on open 2wd? Vehicles are just getting far too dependent on imported electric devices!

Who says you have to on even ground to shift out of 4L? The transfer case and shifter have zero clue if the truck is on flat ground or upside-down. As long as the transmission is in neutral, thats all that matters.

You are incorrect, my jeep sunday morning report this message on my dash and told me i couldn't shift out of 4L until i was on even ground. The lever was locked in place like if you tried shifting into 4L while in drive. The jeep was leaning slightly down hill on the passenger side.

I rolled forward in 4L and squared up on the trail and pointed it downhill a little (front to back) and tried again and this time it let me shift out of 4L.

I was not in an extreme situation and only was in 4L to put the front drivers tire on a pile of rocks so i could level the jeep out for the night to sleep in. When I was leaving i just wanted to go back to 2wd to improve turning and it wouldn't have it.

Thats crazy. I've been on some steep inclines in both my wife's 2019 JL Rubicon and my 2023 JT. I've shifted in and out of 4H and 4L and never had an issue. Nor have I seen that message before.

it was new to me to, and i have done the same as you in the past. You should have been there while i was yelling at the jeep to not tell me what to do.

That is why I made this post, i want get rid of this non-sense.

Go put yours in 4L then dip a corner down and see if it lets you shift out of 4l. There are body control modules that run traction control and these systems have roll and pitch sensors and monitor how much steering is turned to correct traction and hit the brakes for you as needed.

So from a technical standpoint they could easily come up with a nanny that doesn't let you shift out of 4l if there is to much roll.

Well I stand corrected and my apologies haha. I can only imagine the frustration while that happened. I cant stand the nannies either. Its times like this when I appreciate my 2000 TJ 5 speed.

Not a transfer case expert by any means, but looking at both the electrical schematics and disassembly/assembly instructions, there is a lot going on with it and how it interfaces with the DTC, shifter motor and Transfer Case Selector. Think it would be pretty involved trying to ad hoc something and not throw warnings.

I am hoping at end of day, there is a little gate/pin deal that locks things in place at the shifter and is given a signal to retract when condition is correct.

If you could just cut/trim the gate/pin so it' can't engage but still function then you won't have to screw with removing a system. These Np241's aren't that much different then a NP231 in a xj i had.
