To any fellow tuning nerds out there, or anyone who has HP Tuners and wants to learn DIY and wants to have a better understanding of shift scheduling in their 8 speed, I have spent the last few weeks creating a tool in Microsoft Excel that I wanted to share with the forum.
The way these transmissions are set up to shift is based on "OSS" or output shaft speed. Bascially, it means your drive shaft speed. Transmission tuning in this is not based on MPH like on GM stuff. In tuning a bunch of these, I came to realize I could not use the same generic shift scheduling across different customers because due to gear size and tire size, actual MPH and RPM varied greatly. To make the tuning easier for me, I created this excel tool to give my customers a truely customizeable experience in regards to how their shifting is set up.
If you want to use your shift schedules located in your HP Tuners read and get a visual and meaningful representation of what the numbers mean, simply copy them into the correct table in this tool. Make sure you enter in your gear ratio, tire diameter, and tire revs/mile in order to get accurate data. You can then tweak your tables to the RPM/MPH you want using the tool.
As an add on, just know that on nearly every 8 speed I have tuned, even on other makes and models, aggression table #5 is the one that is used the most in normal driving situations.
Enjoy! And as always, hit me up if you want your JL or JT tuned.
