Do whatever you want to a Gladiator but it will never have a larger "legal" tow and payload rating no matter what you do to it.

Not actually true, if you go to an actual truck upfitter they can stamp a new gvwr and gcvwr on it as long as they're fine assuming liability. Tow rating is not a legal rating, its an SAE standardized test that allows manufacturers to compare apples to apples, your GVWR and GCVWR are the only 2 actual legal numbers. That dually with the ugly fenders if I remember right was done as a professional conversion and basically custom chassis, axles etc and was rated as an f250 or 350 by the upfitter (If not that specific one I know one of them was but i'm 90% sure that was it).

The interwebs says that is only true if the upfitter is delivered an incomplete manufactured vehicle (I.E. Chassis Cab) and does the final build out and then can apply their certification ratings. Those vehicle can get recertified different but only if they go back to the same upfitter.

Nope, there are different types of upfitters. Alterers work on vehicles before first retail sale, so they can get a gladiator make a bunch of frame and axles changes for example and re rate it. Manufacturers take incomplete parts and make complete vehicles, and modifiers do the work after retail sale. Since gvwr is actually based on the frame, axles, brakes etc, for a dually if you throw the body on an exciting dually you basically are now rated for the dually weight rating instead.

In other countries like Australia you can get your vehicle recertified by just doing the work yourself and taking it in even.

Interesting. I am open to learning something new but I will admit I am probably skeptical until I physically put eyes on an example of this.

At what point though is it really still a Gladiator if all you do is scab a body on 1 ton frame?

The real question to me is, do you call it the gladiator 3500 or the gladiator 350?

I suppose the OP is dreaming about it so it'll "look cool" but this is my totally stock 2020 JTR last June. The trailer weighed 4000 lbs. and I towed it from Seattle to San Luis Obispo, CA. Not a single issue.
