I bought an M1102 trailer from GovPlanet earlier this year. It's pretty big, the bed is really tall. Been looking at mounting a ladder on it someplace. lol It's not too heavy though, 1400lbs, and rated for 2700lbs payload. It's an aluminum body on a steel frame. Tires track a little wider then the Jeep but I'm able to take it through our woods but it definitely will not fit through tight trails.

Was pretty painless to go through the actual purchase process. Get the extra form they ask about if you want to get it titled in your state. I needed it for NY and had everything required and only had to make a single DMV trip to get it titled so that was a success. What tires are on it never came up.

I'm leaving the Pintle Hitch on it and did not have to touch the wiring as I got an adaptor to plug into my 7 pin and changed out the turn signal bulbs to 12v LEDs. Didn't have to touch the running lights.

May get matching wheels and tires in the future but no plans currently. An adaptor would put the wheels out further so I don't want to do that and I don't want to do an axle replacement.

Heck, that's only 400 lbs heavier than my 5x10 cargo trailer.
What sort of deal did you get, if I may ask?

Sure,

My winning bid was $1550 and then there is GovPlant Fee + local sales tax + Title Document fee which put it just over $2k.
Did you have to go pick it up?

Haven't seen any mention of age for those surplus tires. As tires age, the compound becomes harder with less traction. Tires older than ten years really aren't safe for the road. I know most people completely ignore this, but it is a safety issue.

Yes, and this particular place only had pick-up on Wednesday or Thursday from 10-2 or something like that. It is depot specific but very limited. This particular place was not a military base, it was 3rd party that takes in equipment from all over the place to sell.

I was rolling the dice that it would be drivable. Heard cases where the brakes are stuck or the axles are not good and things like that. Also did not get a temporary travel plate as I would have had to get that through NJ DMV as that is where the trailer was located, the NY DMV would not do anything for me here. I did my homework on the hitch height/type and the plug adaptor and everything worked. Got it connected up and drove it a few miles and checked it and then another 10 miles and checked it and everything was fine so took it the rest of the way.

Initially I looked into shipping but the quote I got was the same price as the trailer itself for shipping it about 175 miles.

Great Point!

The tires that come with this are the same Run-flat ones that are on the Humvees. But like you said, they are 10 years old. The 8 lug bolt pattern is the same as the older Chevy 2500 trucks and I picture getting a few of those wheels once I need them. I only use the trailer local right now but if I was using this for any kind of distance travelling I would definitely replace right away. I stayed off the highways for my trip back for this reason.

Your trailer is a perfect example of why for most people a commercial trailer would be better.

My STS can haul over 3000 lbs and weighs 350 lbs.

But if I ever subjected my STS to the kinds of things that your trailer is designed to handle, it would fall apart in 100 miles.

I woldnt' be surprised if your trailer can actually haul 5000 lbs over the road with out a problem.

Does it have brakes?

Its also much cooler looking than my STS.

You have to pick up stuff you win. In the auction, it shows its location, so you need to be careful to bid only on stuff near you.

When I won the bid for the 5.56 brass, there were better deals farther away. But this was only an hour from my home.

Yes, it has surge brakes so they are not electronic. They engage by the tow vehicle slowing and the trailer pushing against it. It also has Parking brakes that work really well.

Definitely cheaper / better options for on road hauling. Going through the woods and creek beds is where this shines. :)

Yes. And a pintle hitch drawbar looks badass. Ha.

A friend of mine used to haul his 10,000 lb boat with a surge brake trailer. It was a little hairy. You would step on the brakes and . . . nothing. Then a CLUNK as the trailer overcame the stiction in the surge brake coupling and the brakes came on.

But this was (stupidly) hauling a 30 ft boat with a Chevy van rated to tow ~4000 lbs. ha.

On a Gladiator with a 3000 lb trailer, brakes are a nice to have. Not really a necessity.

I had to tow a M1102 all over Iraq and Kuwait, It would bounce around side to side and feel like it was pushing the truck around but we probably had less than a thousand pounds in it. and that was towing with a M1025 (fiberglass door gun truck) you can probably find some 17in rims and at leas have all the same size tires.
