Anyone with the ecoDiesel have good success rolling your own with HP tuners, including programming a backup PCM?

GDE and MrTuner look interesting but the added expense (+$600) to buy and program a backup PCM on top of the tune versus being able to tinker with it and modify and flash at will has me divided on which way to choose.Anyone have experience they would share? Beating corvettes at stoplights? Blowing up motors with 6k miles?
