I called up ARE and asked about the weight limits on their Classic line for the JT. They said that it could hold any weight that.a cross bar rack could hold. That includes a RTT. I told them that mine was not the one built for added weight. So it looks like I can add a RTT and awning on my ARE Classic camper with no issues. On for overloading and off for general 4 wheeling in a hotel. Any thoughts on that.

Sounds ok, but don't foget the weight of people in the tent and possibly an awning on the arms also, there also are some very light weight RRTs out there in the 70-80 pound range that are hard tops......Jack

Check the dynamic versus static weight rating. You may find that dynamic, while moving will be about half that of the weight rating when the vehicle is stopped. So if dynamic is 300lbs, and your RTT only weighs 180lbs you'll be fine. Add two adults and gear, say 400lbs, your static load only needs to be 580lbs.

Still debating between a RTT and a quality ground tent. Not liking the thought of all that weight up high plus the cost. Even a Shift Pod is less. An awning with sides and use that for a tent is another option.

Are you old and like to drink while camping??? I went this route due to being old and liking to drink.. :) If Wifezilla is not camping with me I can sleep at an angle and close the tailgate and shell window...if she is with me I put a tailgate tent on and even the German Shedder fits between us lol
