As much as I love dogs, I don't want one anymore. They just don't live long enough.

My last dog, a very sweet Brittany Spaniel, when it came her time to cross the rainbow bridge, I cried like a baby. Just hurt too much so, I've decided I can't/won't go through that again.

If I see a dog, I'll definitely give it a good head scratch/ear rub and such so, for me, that's enough to get my 'doggie fix'.
You don't have to tell me about it. I had 2 goldens, Cooper and Jake. They where opposite ends of the rainbow. Couldn't be more different from each other. I still get tears in my eyes thinking about them.

Yeah, I lost an amazing yellow lab to cancer at seven. It came out of nowhere. He was super healthy and we ran 3-4 miles together several times a week. He was my best friend. We went everywhere together and knew what each other was thinking even though we couldn’t talk. I sucked it up and got another dog and he’s great too. Although a very different dog. Now he’s almost seven and I worry about him although he’s super healthy too. He’s a staffy.

My current furry kid, Mia. Great co-pilot on the trail.

I lost Cooper to colon cancer. Believe or not. It started out as skin cancer on his right rear leg, between the paw and knee. He was 12.

Jake blew his right knee out at the age of 10. Had surgery to fix it. After surgery, he basically quit moving. Getting him up was an act of congress. Then he got hip dysplasia. Followed by arthritis in his back. To get him up. Had to put a beach towel under him and lift. Note, he was a 110 lb dog. My wife couldn't lift him. So we made the decision to put him down at the age of 11.

Yeah man. It sucks. When my dog couldn’t run or go on long walks anymore, I made a wagon for him and took him on walks around the neighborhood. It kept his spirits up. I’m still not prepared to talk about our last night at the emergency vet together and that was almost eight years ago.

I’m definitely a cat person. 🐈. I grew up with cats…..I had horrible allergies as a kid. Had 5 years of allergy shots.

My husband & I had two kittens after we graduated from college. After 3 weeks ….I developed a bad case of asthma. No more catsā€¦ā€¦šŸ˜ž That was 30 years ago.
We haven’t had any pets ever since.😣

My allergies have been in control and no meds…. we’re tempted to ā€˜try again’.

There’s a ’Cat Cafe’ in town where you can go visit and sit with the kitties. That won’t necessary give me an answer to the asthma situation (since it happened after weeks of exposure). Tempted to ask if we could try being a foster….or maybe the Cat Cafe will give us ā€˜the fix’ temporarily.

Kinda like babysitting kids……..you can give them back!!! šŸ˜‚

Dog person all the way. Do not hate cats but not my preference.

Current dog is "Spike" a shelter rescue Beagle that was surrendered after his original owner had died.

Last ones was "Boris and Bullwinkle" a set of senior Goldens same littermates we took in when their owners went into assisted living and a local vet was boarding them until they got adopted together. Had these knuckleheads for about 4 years before they aged out. There is a few more but I will save the bandwidth on them.

Beagles are one of my "cool dogs". Spike is a great looking example. We often go with ARL adoptions. Pickle is one of those and Pickle is all Yawnie's fault.

Naw, Barbara insists that the proper way to put TP on is backwards, so even if they tried, it wouldn't unroll. But when she's gone on a quilt retreat or some longer trip, it gets installed properly. They still don't bother it.
Lucky likes to sneak up to things and steal them and run, looking back to see if we are chasing her. If not, she stops and looks disappointed.
Yawnie was nothing but a "lover-boy". He'd play, but mostly liked to be my shadow.
The others would plot and plan on ways to cause trouble.

Pickle is Yawnie's fault. When he was an inside/outside cat (before something gripped and punctured his neck, causing me to say enough, inside only) he was laying in the driveway watching a kitten that was laying up against the garage door. Yawnie never bothered kittens, but would chase adult cats away. This was HIS turf. He laid there watching that kitten for quite a while. We already had plans to adopt the Tonk boys and decided that Yawnie and two more were enough. So I gathered up the kitten and we took it to ARL.
Two days later we regretted that move and went back to ARL to get the kitten back. It didn't work that way - kitten was in quarantine like they do with all "new comers" and wasn't available to be taken. Rats, too bad we didn't just keep it. While we were there we saw several other cats of similar coloring and age. We asked it we could "interview" some and they took Pickle out of his cage and brought him to us in a room where we could interact. Pickle literally walked all over us. He checked us out, walked over my shoulders and head, across us sitting, standing - he checked us out and approved.
It was the Friday before the 4th of July. Any animal with stripes could be adopted at a big discount. While they were prepping him to come home with us - the gal up front asked "does he have any stripes" - hey, that cat is one huge bar code - he's nothing BUT stripes.
His name is "Pickle" - do you want to change that?
Heck no! Perfect name for the little guy. Little - yeah, for a while. He had huge eyes, huge ears and big paws. I suspect he's part Maine Coon. He's not a little cat.

This was before the stairs were ripped out and replaced with new oak flooring - (easier to clean the cat feathers off of)
Lucky was a child here (the silver tabby ball of hair 2nd from bottom)

"The fellas" (or "The Tonk Boys") Koko and Tuvak -> (waiting for me to get back home - they are a bit like dogs, companion cats that demand your attention)

Lucky - she came onto the property one night as a kitten of maybe 3 or 4 weeks old. How she made it here alive I'll never understand. She was screaming at the top of her little kitten lungs. Could hear her in my shop, in the house - she was loud.
She was afraid of people. It was a cold rainy July. It took some real doing to catch her. Barbara said "to the ARL with her" but I won that battle.
The other boys were all grown up, she was a teeny kitten - and is now pretty much the alpha cat of the house. They don't bother her or get in her way. She runs things.

I get this, but I will never be without a dog. I've only spent a handful of days in my life without a dog. I'm on my 3rd as an adult. I always thought there would be no way I could care about another dog, but I have found each new one has helped me move on from the last one. My current one has been with me almost every second. We have never been apart for more than a few hours. He goes to work with me when I coach and we have driven about 150K miles together to many states. Now we live in Utah so every day is a chance for adventure. With my boy turning 10 this year and seeing the slowdown I know the inevitable is coming sooner than I want.

With that said, each one gets harder and harder to say goodbye to. This one was there when both my parents passed away a couple years ago. We have been through a lot together good and bad so I know this will be the toughest one.

What’s more embarrassing as a grown ass man? A little dog or a cat? If I had to choose, I’d probably pick a cat over an ankle biter dog.
How about neither? I love dogs, but I would always choose a big one. Maybe a smaller one when I'm really old which is rapidly approaching.

lol That’s why I said if you had had to choose. I can’t stand yippee dogs and I’m not a cat person.
