My Auto Stop - Start quit working about a year ago. I didn't even notice it wasn't working for about 6 months. I guess the battery died. I don't miss it. By not removing the battery or disconnecting it, is it doing any harm?

In your situation, it is not doing any harm. When my Aux Battery failed, it died and was in a state that didn't affect the Main Battery. I drove it that way for at least six months.

You should have a warning light on the dash (red A) showing the Aux Battery failed the startup test. If not, it is something else causing the ESS not to work and you should look into it.

If your batteries are around three years, or older, plan on replacing the Main Battery in the very near future.

My ESS stopped working on my '21
shortly before my main battery failed
after only four years in 2025.

There is little warning
before it fails completely.
I felt lucky to get it jump started
and drove straight to my local parts store.

The original auxiliary battery is still in there.

Twenty years ago
a person could buy batteries
that lasted seven years.
One would think
that battery technology and durability
would have improved
in that length of time.

Recommend getting it checked out
immediately.

Just out of curiosity, what warning lights are coming up on your dash? It doesn't make sense that the aux battery has been dead for a year and it hasn't killed the main battery long before now. A dead aux battery will drain your main one unless you've bypassed something. There are many other reasons that your auto stop start will stop working.

But then twenty years ago (and longer) car batteries basically just started the car. Now in most cars there is a small drain on them constantly, many cars especially Jeeps aren't driven every day, some not for weeks at a time. Rarely do many ever get back to a full charge.

A few years back, I had a 2016 motorhome and after 8 years when I sold it, it still had the same three batteries it came with, and never had a battery related issue. But then I always had it plugged into power to maintain the batteries. .

It's not the batteries ... It's the additional tech & electronics in these newer vehicles that feed off the battery constantly and even while it sits in the garage. Battery technology hasn't improved enough to compensate for it.
