Automatic or manual transmission

Just wondering if there is an advantage for either one. Sometimes I wish I got a manual on my Tacoma but I couldn't get any tech upgrades I had to get automatic. From the looks of it it looks like a manual might be 2000 cheaper. I know they've done a lot better than automatic transmissions. Are they more reliable now than a manual?thanks for the help.
