Hi - as some of you know I have a 6.2L LS3 swap in my 77 Trans Am. I changed the oil and oil filter this past weekend and just wanted to be doubly sure I’m using the right amount of oil.

The oil pan is from a 1998-2002 F body which has 5.5 quarts oil capacity. I’m assuming that I should use 5.5 quarts of oil? I’ve seen some posts on the web mentioning to add another half quart for the lines and filter but the 2000 Z28 owner’s manual also says 5.5.

The dipstick looks to show the oil is at the right level but it’s a Lokar flexible dipstick that I’m not totally confident in its accuracy.

Thanks

Generally speaking, oil capacity was spec'd out with a full filter change - meaning if it says 5.5 that includes the filter.
It used to be there was a lower number for an oil change without filter change (boy, that dates me) then it came to be that hey, you should not change oil without changing filter so the capacity was eventually given just one way - assuming you had a new filter in place.
I'd bet that the lines don't take all that much.

Too much oil and depending on the exact engine situation, windage will foam the oil.

I see some people say "not a problem because the crankshaft isn't touching the oil." if that were true then wind wouldn't create waves and foam on a large lake. It's the breeze, not physical contact with the oil.
