Beware of scammers who are following the forum’s new rules. I encountered one on Friday who responded to a WTB post of mine and sent me pics of the part, WITH a hand written note detailing username, price, and date:
After agreeing to a price, I noticed the user’s profile (“Dougladiator”) was deleted. When I questioned the user, he played a good long con and accused me of reporting him. User had great knowledge of Gladiators, Wranglers and these forums.
A long text exchange made it seem like we were actually both afraid of getting conned, even appearing to back out of the deal due to his own fear at time. So I gambled and send payment via Venmo using purchase protection, and the user even went so far as to say he was then on his way to to mail the lights, promising a tracking number. Pro level manipulator. Lots of time spent working on me for $225. Sadly, in the time he spent working me, he could have made more in an honest profession.
When I checked in to get the tracking number, I didn’t get any further responses. I was able to cancel the transaction before Venmo extracted from my bank. The user probably needed me to sit on this a couple days until the ACH transaction posted.
Please note the user’s phone number is 626-268-3496 in case he appears on this forum again under a different name. I searched and found this number on a couple other high-dollar peer forums (boating and camera equipment) where he is no doubt scamming others.
Ultimately, you are not safe buying from a seller unless it’s in person or through an platform like Amazon. Even the handwritten product pic is not a safeguard. If you do buy online, use a payment system that draws from your credit card rather than checking or debit account so that you have fraud protection.
