Sometimes (not always), AWD is viscously coupled as well, with no mechanical transfer case. Thats how it was on my STi, but it had a manually controllable center differential, so you could adjust the viscous coupling up to full lock, like a TC. Lines really are blurred now though. They advertised my compass as being 4 wheel drive, and I guess it was, but it automatically switched to 4wd on its own if it sensed slip, no matter what. You couldn't turn it off. But you could force it to stay on, not off. Also, it was front wheel drive based, rather than rear. So it was more like an AWD vehicle, except it had a mechanical transfer case, not viscous coupling. But no low range, so more like AWDAWD doesn't have a Low Range. Full Time 4 Wheel Drive does have Low Range.
Then there are the Trailhawk Compasses and Cherokees, which have some sort of low range, but otherwise have the AWD/4wd hybrid system like my compass had. I don't know anything about those, beyond what the website says. Never researched them too much.
