I have a dead battery this morning.

Do I have to change out both? My ESS stays off always due to my Tazer.

I don't fully understand how the aux battery works in relation to the real one

That is good question that I cannot answer with certainty, so I will try and answer based on past experiences and things I've read here:

1) Whether the ESS is on or not - the battery for ESS is an integrated part of the electrical system
2) When one battery dies, the other will typically drain as well
3) It should be, but maybe not 100% needed, to replace them both at the same time because of reasons 1 and 2 listed above

Just under 49k

And I live in the AZ desert which tends to murder batteries
I keep ESS switched off... In the morning, the aux buttons started being unavailable.... I would have to start the truck to get the alternator going to get the aux switches working. That triggered me to change both batteries.

The AAA service cost me only about $20 more than it did to do the battery myself on my wife's car.

I did not switch out the ESS battery so we'll see how that goes

1 - yeah, pretty basic. They are wired in parallel
2 - it depends. If 1 battery failed due to an open, it will have little to no impact on the other battery. If it failed due to a 'short' or similar issue, it can take out the other battery. So unless you had a full diagnosis other than "failed load test", you won't know.
3 - all battery makers will say that when batteries are charged in parallel, they need to be of the same AGE, same size, same capacity. Jeep is already violating one of those things - very different capacities/sizes.
Takes only 2 hours or so to take my aux battery through 3 phases of charging with my AGM charger, takes the crank battery several hours. So - how does the PCM know one is full, the other not? Good question since the IBS is on the crank battery only.

Aux Switch Bank Module (ASBM) Minimum Voltage Time: 10 sec
Aux Switch Bank Module (ASBM) Battery Minimum Voltage: 11.8 V
IBS3 Battery Capacity (0-252 Ah): 254.000 Ah
IBS3 Parameterized Type of Battery Mode: Signal Not Avaiable
IBS3 Maximum OCV Voltage (13-13.33 V): 13.000 V

If these are all the same, that tells me your battery was under 11.8 volts.

remove both battery's re charge and test not always is it both battery's only need to replace whats bad? also note that after replacement it can take up to 30 min or so for all your previous radio functions or apps like xm or off road pages to re set but it will all come back on its own

Why are you resurrecting months and years old threads with confusion?

Your last post is not good advice - we've been here for years and have it figured out and Jeep batteries although one can greatly outlive the other, because they've been through the same life experiences - usually one goes not long after the other because of age and usage.

Autozone for battery testing? LOL - hardly. Many of them flipped burgers last week and will be at some new job next month. They don't have the proper experience or training. No way.

Multiple posts in strings, quoting yourself - have another beer.

Autozone LOL

Glad they finally put a banned aid on that!

I know I should not laugh at someone being banned - unless it's funny of course, my laughing is how you stated it. Man, Jeep people have senses of humor (maybe it's a good thing)

Another fellow I was having a nice PM conversation with was banned today - in the middle of our conversation. Hmmm, I must have missed something. He was a hardened marine but that one surprised me.

Guess I should tread lightly. Hey, that would make a great name for a group of outdoors people.
