2 reasons:
That's a reservoir - no flow. It takes overflow as coolant expands, and when the engine cools and things contract a really small amount may go back into the engine. You may have 2 or 3 ounces moving back and forth for every heating and cooling cycle
and
crud and crap are heavy and will settle, not rise up to the highest point in a system and kindly drop into the overflow/reservoir.

In any case, there's no real flow there. It's sort of like the old cooling system overflow bottles you saw in the 70s and 80s. Very very little coolant movement, no actual flow.

Thanks for the clarity. I was under the assumption that it was actually flowing into the tank like a small bypass. Not an overflow. My mistake. Appreciate your insight!

Wow that certainly doesn’t seem normal or acceptable. I hope your flushing gets out all the contaminants.

Really surprised that Mishimoto has not come out with a coolant filter kit for the Jt/jl.
I think the kit for the JK could easily be adapted to the Gladiator. “Every car” can benefit from a coolant filter. There is no downside.
