V8

Remember the viper and grand Cherokee with a V10/V8 used a D44 axle once upon a time.
And neither would be under the stress a JK/JT would be in the offroad environment

Oh really? I have seen many heavily wheeled ZJ/WJ with D44a rear axles.

That being said you can’t compare the axles of old to the current iteration in strength. These d44s can live with 38s and 40s with more power, the older generations with spit ujoints caps with a tired 4.0 and 35s

So heavily wheeled that they were a threat to replace the wranglers capability? Or randomly beefed up to keep up?

They were wheeled side by side. Before the unlimited wrangler the unibody Jeeps were the family wheeler…. Not to mention they shared a large portion of their running gear with their contemporary Wrangler counterparts.

None of the rigs of those days were great over 33s due to stock drivetrain limitations.
