Dash camera?

I never had one before but considering it. A few concerns I have. I don’t want to have to disassemble my dash and hack up wiring. I don’t want camera equipment and wiring all over the place on my dash. Is there anything that I should consider that is easy to install and concealable that is worth considering?

I have a radar detector that I installed (hardwire) right below my review mirror and the install was super easy. You can literally just push the wiring behind the edge of the trim around the windshield without removing it and it stays out of site. After making your way around the windshield, if you have the aux switches, you wire into those in the passenger footwell and call it a day.

This is a work in progress but I like the concept. I used and like the bulletpoint Rubigrid dash mount. It is a very easy install and provides tablet, phone, camera mounting. In the pictures I have an old dash cam mounted that I am looking to replace but haven't decided on replacement yet. Also, the camera power wire I am still working on. My idea for the power wire is to run it up under the dash through a hole (to be drilled in mount location under the felt seen in picture). I have thoughts of installing auxiliary switches in the dash. These will go where factory auxiliary switches are located. When I install the switches I will run the camera power wire along with Apple and Galaxy cords through the hole (to be drilled) to the bulletpoint mount location.

I went with the Thinkware FA200. I have the aux switches so I'll consume the constant on and the accc on leads in the footwell to wire up the parking mode and normal mode. I just don't know where to run the rear camera. I'm thinking above the window in the hard top and then just unplug the camera when I remove the top. I thought about the soundbar but could see my kids fussing with it or something. It's coming today, can't wait to install.

I'm just using the BulletProof/point mount and an app on my phone for a dash cam set up. I didn't feel like having to mess with wires.

Which mount did you use for your radar detector? I just installed a Blendmount in the GT4 and Fiesta ST, but they apparently don't have one for the Gladiator with all the sensors around the rear view mirror.

I don't have the adaptive curse control so plenty of room behind and around my mirror.

I don't have the adaptive curse control so plenty of room behind and around my mirror.

The adaptive cruise has made finding a solution challenging. I hate the suction cups as well, plus my windshield is tinted, and I don't want something that potentially could pull up the tint. I don't know if it would, but would rather not risk it.

I have tint on my windshield as well. I put a square of static cling film on it, then attached the dash cam to the cling. It held for trails in Moab and Colorado. I probably should’ve cut the square smaller, but I just used it as the size it was.

a new user here, and I am only waiting for my JT, however, I've installed BlackVue 750 2channel (so, two cams) on my JLU - one on windshield right behind the rear view mirror and one in the rear. I hope (for my own sake) that JT is very similar.

My install took me about 3 hours, but it was more complex than it had to be - I was accomplishing more than just wiring for the dashcam.
- I've run the power from AUX switch wire terminations under the hood through the firewall below the batteries - that's what took most of time. It's a PIA process, but was also running a 10-gauge wire to power a ham radio at the time.
- once in the cabin, I ran the dashcam power up the A pillar, over the windshield towards the rear view mirror. I had to open up a couple of pieces of plastic on the A-pillar and directly below it, but no major digging through dashboard - that took all of 10 mins. The horizontal run towards the center of the windshield (on top) didn't require any tools - there is a gap and (Jeep, I'm looking at you), the plastic is pretty loose, so you can just push the wire into the gap. NOTE: my JLU DOES NOT have the advanced safety or premium sound, so it's just a simple mirror, there isn't a box with sensors there.
- the coax cable running from front cam to the rear went through top of the windshield back to the A-pillar, and then alongside the frame under the plastic covers towards the back where it comes out from under the plastic covers on top of what would be a C-pillar in a roof-less configuration. I had to remove 4 plastic pieces, one at a time to run the wire. It couldn't have taken me more than 20 mins, although there was some cursing when I was trying to push the wire above the B-pillar.

Things I had in mind when I decided to run with this setup:
- the front cam needed to be out of sight so it doesn't interfere with the view through what already is a pretty small windshield. luckily blackvue, while not the smallest on the market, isn't "tall".
- I didn't want to dig through the dash, just like OP
- I DID want to run off of AUX switch, so I can shut off the cam, although Blackvue has parking mode, so unless I turn the parking mode off, it just goes from video to lapse-video mode. Also, I needed to justify paying for AUX switches on a Jeep that I try to keep "stock, with a few tasteful mods", which eliminates light bars and such. In theory you could just tie it to some ignition-power wire and spare the whole through-the-firewall adventure.

Other considerations (not install related):
- I've disabled sound recording on my dashcam - in CT, I need consent to record sound. otherwise, I believe i'm ok (i'm not a lawyer)
- I went with blackvue - it's expensive af, but to me it's worth it, especially with parking mode, night mode, and it's form factor is good. Ask me after I install it on JT - I may change my mind
- I did not want to take up space on top of the dashboard - I have RAM bar there, but it seems that some states have an issue with too much stuff being on top of the dash and presumably blocking the view (although because I'm tall, at that angle, the only view that is blocked is the view of the hood)
