Watching that guy is why I do not trust any of my machines to shops like that... When they tried to force the input shaft over out of plane to fit the chain on against the seal he previously described as being a bitch to install, then later admitted to having left the original in place, thus further wrecking the seal he didn't replace because it's a bitch to replace. There's plenty else to be unhappy with if that were my transfer case, but... geez...

Meanwhile, no. The clutches are actuated by the snail cam in the middle. Whatever is turning that combined with mechanical advantage is what is doing the locking. Still, I wouldn't sweat it. It's a decades old proven design, and the benefits outweigh the potential costs.
No joke. That was a rough watch. I have done a couple manual trans rebuilds and transfer case gear swaps and would have been more comfortable than that guy pulling that case apart. Its so hard to judge how good shops are. I do my own work as well but that was a holdover from my farm upbringing when we never had the money to send anything out. You would hope people that do drivetrain work everyday would be more competent than that.

I am interested to see what the differences are for the mp3022 in the gladiator/wrangler. Kinda want to buy one just to pull it a part.

I have the selec trac in my Overland. Basically it adds the option of an all wheel drive. You don't have to use it unless you want to. I get the impression that it's a wise choice to use if the weather's sketchy. Using it all the time is probably a waste, and will not be economical.

This is the technical documents for the MP30xx series. I wish to have found more specs and docs on it as its a cool transfer case, but its a part made my magna and OEMs taylor it.

And if I am wrong, my mistake. I have had a heck of a time finding out the particulars of this transfer case and literature from mopar on it.

Appreciate sharing the above…its great information and confirms to my overall understanding as well - being new to 4x4 world and mechanics associated with it. ?

I suppose to help clarify the mud a little, the clutch pack for lockup, the clutches are not being used to perform the lockup but to provide the transition between the locked and unlocked state by modifying the proload tension, the break away force as it were.

There work not unlike a pto protection clutch, it has a given and specific lock up preload and any force beyond that causes it to break away and not destroy the pto output or the impliment. In this case it is linking front and rear axles and the lockup is progressive.

As stated for many people this is all the 4wd they want and probably way more than they need. I imagine your typical sky roof sahara with leather drive getting into my old cj with the twin stick dana 300 the t176 with the blank shift knob and a toggle switch and push button chassis power and ignition /starter, yup, no interlock for me buddy, crawling on the starter! Their horror I feel would be evident.

So for every luxobarge grand wagoneer there is a jeep'a'trench cj5 and for every cascade transmission there is a full time awd.
