Hello.

I am thinking about adding an engine block heater to my 21 Gladiator, and I was wondering if anyone has done this addition to their Gladiator?

If you have, what kind of cost can I expect to have an OEM one installed by my dealer?

Thanks!

If it is a diesel, it will come with a block heater. The diesel block heater add-on is just including the necessary cord to be able to plug it in.

If it is a gas V6, the block heater is about $100. To install it requires removing the alternator, and is a several hour job. I would expect up to $500 for labor, depending on the dealer.

I wanted to add one to mine, but after looking at the install process, I opted for one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PM87W3I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Let us know what the dealer quotes, and if you get it done.

With newer engines and thinner oils, most people don't have any problems. I use it when it gets down around 35, just for the comfort factor and quicker heat in the cab.

Down? Around 35? Down?

I'd expect heat in 2 minutes from 35. You must live in a warm place.

Around here 35 is UP sometimes.

I wouldn't expect anyone to need a block heater until below zero. It's normally for easier starting right?

The block heater is the freeze plug style of element heater. A warm and toasty block will help with all cold weather starts from freezing on down to "forget this" temps.

Modern FI engies running the new light oils dont have anywhere near the problems of the old days but if the battery is less than tip top, you might only get a few good cranks before things go sideways.

If cold weather operations in the normal for you or it MUST start then a block heater and battery heater pad should be on the short list. A zerostsrt hydronic heater, in the rad hose or even better the pumped fluid type, is a great alternative to the in the block style.

In a perfect world a start pilote system would also be included but most folks would grenade the engine, one spritz is good, a hold second hold would be amazing, right?

In the beginning I was paranoid and thought of all the cold add ons I should have but then I realized, once my plow rig starts, it may not shut down for 3 days and with the heat set to "africa hot", the block, the hood, the frame rails, the whole interior and everything in it... it all heat soaks and then I'm worried about cooking the coolant over at 15°... I can't imagine the JT is any better given all the magic they had to pull to keep it from puking while towing.

In short, yes a heater will help start up and it will do amazing on getting cab heat going quick, flattens the curve if you will; first you heat the block, then the coolant, then the exchanger then the air and then finally you get a trickle of dog breath... which then builds to an unsatisfactory windshield clearing two dogs breath.

For my diesel I just ordered, it was a $95 option.
Did you see it listed on your build sheet or if you received a window sticker ? I had it on my build sheet, but I do not see it listed anywhere... I am going to have to go check now. I did see a reference to a supplemental heater, but I believe that is for cabin heat when a cold vehicle is started.

Also, if ordered from the factory, I'm guessing it already comes with the plug, do you know how it is factory routed ?

According to some postings a few months ago, the diesel now requires the block heater to be ordered. Initially, it was included on all, and the block heater option was the factory installing the cord.

The block heater cord should be tied to the wiring harness somewhere near the top of the engine bay.

I realize that this is an older thread, but not all diesels automatically came with the block heater, I believe this stopped in 21. Then they even dropped it from being ordered. Now you can retrofit the 22/23 with the newer "dry" style heater... no need to remove/replace the plug, loose coolant and then add the heater. Now you just insert the dry heater core into the existing brass plug and snap it into place. You will also need to order the updated cord.

I'm aware of all this. I've been watching the other threads you have been posting in. Apparently, you missed my previous post, #10 dated 7 March 2022.

I probably did, they all start to run together after awhile. I will check it out though.
