There's been some mentions of this as a thing that exists, but not explanation: With the auto trans (mine is a 23 base Sport), a certain amount of pressure on the brake pedal makes the tranny downshift to provide some engine braking. It's a nice feature, I think, but it would be better if it was more predictable... or if I knew what the trigger points are. Sometimes at very low speed it does it, making it jerky as it rolls to a stop.

Does anybody know what the algorithm is or what triggers it?

its adaptive and learns based off multiple parameters. sometimes it will automatically engage with no brake input if it detects a certain amount of acceleration despite no extra throttle input. Its also more aggressive if you have a trailer hooked up. (probably has a sensor to detect when a trailer is plugged into one of the ports). basically, to answer your question. No there isn't a sure fire way to get engine braking to kick in by modulating the brake pedal. TBH if i know i need a lot of engine braking i just put in M. It will full engine brake on any gear selected in M.

With the cruise control on. Going down a hill. It will down shift to try and hold the speed that the cruise is set at.
