Was anyone in the group allowed to be armed?
Absolutely not!

While I carry when traveling in the US, bringing a firearm into the EU is virtually impossible.
Then trying to bring one into Algeria is a certain date with the Algerian prison system. They take that very seriously since about 20 years ago when a small group of armed terrorists (possibly from Lybia) came across the border and killed a bunch of tourists… The country has been a military/police state since then even though there is a civilian government.

On a trip like that, I would have hired local security--if at all possible.

The ONLY people with weapons were the military. They all carried various forms of AK47’s (they buy most of their weapons from Russia).

We had to report our camp spots every night to the regional military guard. Twice they came to visit us in camp and one time when we were very remote they sent a drone to check us out (I’m assuming it was the military as drones are also forbidden!) As I said before the nomadic people, the Touareg’s, were extremely hospitable. I think it is ingrained in their culture that anyone in the desert is just trying on one level or another to survive and they will always help and treat you like family.

It was a crazy trip and I’m glad we did it but I probably won’t be going back as there are too many other places to explore.

I have them on my Titan and they've never let me down.
