When you can, buy direct from the manufacturer.
When shipping is outrageous, then use a reseller.
I have done this with heavy items (bumper, sliders) learned my lesson after paying the shipping the first time. The next time I price shopped and found that resellers had the same item for the same price, with no shipping charge.
You have to wait longer, but you're saving money.
So, pick your poison.

Used extreme terrain for several years and never any issues. My go to is Quadratec. After reading this post I will be more careful when ordering from extreme terrain.
I must have bad luck all over lol.
Ordered the Mopar steel bumper from quadratic. the fogs are full of moisture. started the return for those in january. They offered a full replacement bumper. I said "Sure will you pay for install then?" they quickly changed their tune. Ive spoken with their CS 4 times since december, and keep being given assurances the replacement lights have shipped. The last time i said "cant you just go have someone remove the ones on your bumper mail those to me and you defect your bumper?" silence lol.

I think both Extreme Terrain and Quadratech have been bought out by some of the big auto parts warehouse companies, thus the poor customer service. I'm sure Covid had to do a number on their bottom lines so selling made sense, but sucks for the consumer.

I think they are setup to be efficient at order taking and delivery, once the system breaks down you’re SOL. They literally drop shipped my order to the wrong address and refused to do anything about it. Had to dispute it through the CC and even then they continued to fight it. Very unethical for them not to admit to their mistake and attempt to correct it.

There are horror stories, and then there are the best company ever stories. All about the very same retailer.

As I understand the thread...
OP got a whole free kit when all he needed was a bolt. Then OP complains about another order that obviously wasn't handled well. And the retailer wants $27 to make it right. And then he finds out the retailer is a conglomerate reseller.

Buy direct from the manufacturer. Pay the shipping. Problem solved.

If you spent your rent money on a Lift kit and it is missing a few bolts and you are pissed. They are bigger problems there.

27 bucks. Dude?

Be well. Jeep on.

Quadratec has not been bought by anybody. They are still a family owned business. The problem with Quadratec is that there has been a generational family change of passing the day to day operations of the company from a founding father to his son(s) that have steered the company from being a stocking dealer of what they offered, to a primarily drop shipper. They have also outsourced their customer service to offsite where as before if you had a problem and called customer service, the customer service rep could actually walk over and physically talk to the shipping warehouse side and resolve issues in real time. That is gone.

Right. Imagine getting a free kit, then still complaining about a bolt, instead of going to your local hardware store and getting the bolt… If i had a dollar for every time I’ve had to manipulate some shit to get it to work.

Been working with Extreme Terrain for many years and I never had a problem with orders. I can't say much of customer service because I never really had to contact them. But I'd say a LOT of companies fall short when it comes to customer service. I usually just go through @Northridge4x4 nowadays.
Northridge has been awesome to buy from. Three Jeeps in a row have had bumpers, sliders etc from them. They have a pickup option in my area (Salt Lake). they even helped me load up. Great service from the one return I’ve had and it was my fault.. Ordered the wrong thing and they made it right.

Amazon no real problem (just know what you are buying and WHO it's coming from or even where it's coming from)

RockAuto - I swore off them years ago after they screwed me over more than once, and their shipping was outrageous for even tiny parts.
(I can get most of the same stuff with free shipping and free returns from Amazon anyway)
I use rock auto to look up the part Numbers mostly so I can buy it on the Jungle site. however R/A has come in clutch on some odd ball stuff as for shipping , you are right

In my experience, Rock Auto is a mixed bag. You can find some decent savings with them if you know how to manipulate their shipping system to minimize multiple location shipping charges. Sometimes it is cheaper to get the additional part from the same location by just upgrading to a premium line for few bucks more but save in the long run by not incurring a second or more shipping charge.

I would never recommend though using Rock Auto if one is in a time crunch should a issue of wrong or defective part is sent and resolution of that and the associated down time is impacting and workarounds cannot be had.

That sucks….. That kinda crap can happen at anytime with any business. I think companies get too big for their britches (and/or go thru mergers & acquisitions)…. They’re only concerned about the bottom line and lose site of the customer service arena. It’s frustrating having to waste your valuable time making phone calls (and talking to people you can’t even understand), & sending emails.

I buy mostly off Amazon and I make sure everything has ‘free returns’ (or I won’t buy it). On a couple occasions, I’ve bought directly from the company websites.
I took a chance ordering BMW t-shirts from a website in Germany….. That made me nervous. I used a generic VISA gift card so there wasn’t any attachment to our ‘other’ cards or accounts. Luckily…everything went smoothly (as expected).
Sure…I’ll buy from that site again but there’s no guarantees on getting the same experience.

Thanks for the clarification and the story behind it, makes sense. Hopefully they make changes, but sadly if they are making more profit with less work they probably won't.

I live like 25 minutes from their main offices and warehouse and know some people closer to the source there.

It is the typical family business story of when the kids take over fresh from having fancy new business degrees and bright ideas, they abandon the old guards way that made them successful in the first place for short term gains and profits.

While they have not been taken over by a Hedge Fund Capital Management company, they are acting in the same style.
