Oh wait, let me shift my brain out of Rubicon mode.

Because yes, the only times I've used 4LO I've also had the lockers engaged.

I keep forgetting it's not standard across all the trims.

So on a Rubicon unlocking the front locker and disconnecting the FAD in 4 Low would give you 2 Low

Not exactly. I think you’d get 3 low, as the fad only disconnects the passenger axle shaft.

Edit: This was my misunderstanding of how this works. @rharr corrected me in a more recent post. Thanks!

Incorrect, you get 2lo. Without the right shaft connected to the wheel, you can't get the spider gears in the diff to lock together and drive either wheel.

That’s why I said “I think”. I wasn’t sure. So with the collar to the right on the outer shaft, the inner shaft doesn’t rotate with the driveshaft rotating? Why would the inner shaft not engage the gears, then rotating the driver side one piece shaft?

The inner shaft spins, with a open diff power goes to the wheel with less traction, with the inner passenger shaft not connected to the wheel, it becomes the wheel with the least traction.

You need both wheels to have a little resistance /traction for a open diff to lock up.

Go back to the days of open rear diff trucks on ice, the power would always go to the tire on the slickest surface.

Hopefully that helps explain it a little better.

Antique video but little has really changed since it was made....

At this point, one wheel, the left, would be on solid ground, and you can see all of the motion going to the right shaft, in our case, the disconnected FAD. This vehicle isn't going anywhere because all of the motion goes out the right.

To add to that - the speed and direction of the right shaft with no load of a wheel on it would be reverse direction and double the speed.
