Curious as to why you think the camera is needed as a safety device. People have gone decades without this and have been OK. If crawling, use your spotter. If going solo, you're doing it wrong.
Your presenting lots of "IF's" . . . I've never been into rock crawling . . . never had a jeep that I'd dare do that with even if I had the hankering to ! My '16-WK2 (trail rated -- thats TRAIL rated; not ROCK rated !) I use a lot to get to distant places . Mostly logging roads - some worse off than others, but also Forest Service "roads" and other "pathways" that allow (jeep trails not rated over 3 - trying to keep it "clean" for trade in purposes) . AND oh I'd say 90% of the time I do it SOLO . . . so there is a very clear need, IN MY MIND, as safety and the desire to be able to have a return (to civilization) with no or minimal "damage" is my priority . Some of the Videos (we have here on the forum) clearly show the usefulness of having that Front Camera -- the mechanical version of a "spotter" ! For ALL the Jeepers out their that go out & dare the fates (like me I suppose) without using a "spotter," bet ALL would agree having the Camera would be a way cool good thing ! SO there ya go . . . that's MY take . . . you can do with or with out the camera or the spotter . . . choices choices . . . so many choices . . . I LIKE that ! :like: Happy Trails .

It is a good question, Even if you could add it, would the touch screen system be able to read it? Software update maybe?
THAT is the million dollar Q that JEEP has not given out a response to as yet ! I hate to admit it but I sort of "ass-umed" the 7" would once the techs flashed the system to ! ? And I certainly would think THAT of the 8.4" (with a flash adjustment) ? I really don't want an Overland (8.4" Option) with it's shitty payload & towing an no max-tow Option . Crap, this might steer me into a Rubicon - but NOW I'd have to weigh the JL or JT option ( $$$ ) . UGH, damn you . . . :crying:

If I was patient enough to order mine and wait for it to be built then I would have definitely got the front cam. But since a local lot had almost exactly what I would want sans the few things I can add (spray in bed liner, tonneau cover) I figured I'd just get one now and hope I can add the front cam later. Here's hoping mopar adds it as an option. I know I've added options to my old RAMs and then taken it to the dealer to get flashed with the option. (like folding mirrors, remote start) all pretty much plug and play once you find the proper parts. I bet that'll be the option here as well.

I have the trail cam. I’ve attached some photos so you can see the mounting on the grill. I can’t get in to see the wiring. What I can tell you is although this is a nice to have it does not replace a spotter completely, in saying that if I had the option to reorder mine now I would have included the camera again.

Thanks for the detailed pics. We already know we need a wire connector and a washer fluid line and it appears we will also need a grill insert as it looks like it is molded into the grill. Just need a part number for the kit now.

Just took enough apart to learn that if it's made available as an accessory, we will be running wires/cables along with the washer fluid line. There is no connector for it anywhere close to the mounting location. Unless they have it tied to another part of the harness down the line, we will be adding it.

I love the idea of this and would like to get one but I also love Stingers so it wouldn't really work for me. The stinger would block a majority of the lens. However, I can always remove the stinger and have the camera there. So I may just end up getting it especially since it sounds like it'll be such a hassle to add it afterwards.

I put one of these in my JKR
https://www.amazon.com/junsun-170°W...|PSEL&qid=1562178758&s=prime-exclusive&sr=8-1

I think I'm just going to put one in the Gladiator and instead of running the remote camera to the back, I'll run it to the front AND I'll be recording all the time.

When the screen goes dormant it looks just like a rear view mirror (and functions like one). I was/am very impressed with the imagery and functionality of this unit.

Hard wire it, add a 64gb Micro SD and you're cooking with gas for about $140.

Wont have a washer, but I'm not too concerned about a washer.

Here is a picture of the rear camera on the mount I built for it

I think the factory way, if it's made available, will be the best setup but also likely the most expensive. I may look aftermarket as well but don't want another screen or attachment to deal with so I would likely go with the option that interfaces with the uconnect. I agree on the washer. Don't think it is necessary.

Let your wallet be your guide. The screen overlays the windshield mounted rear view mirror.

So in the case that you wanted it, you would have the front camera in the rear view mirror, and the rear camera displaying in the dash simultaneously.

I have serious reservations about Mr. Squirty freezing and busting the housing, and think I'd rather not have that.

Ordered and best I can tell it's built, waiting on the grizzly bear riding a unicorn to deliver it.

2 door like my profile pic will go places nothing else will, but if you are going to be traveling in it, there just isn't any room/storage.

I have a specific need for the tow/cargo capacity so it was a no brainer. I drove a ZR2, but there were a number of things I did not like, chief among them was visibility

We use washer fluid up here that's rated for really cold temps. I have had zero issues with anything washer related except for in our 2010 Rubicon. That camera being right out front and taking the brunt of possible -65f plus the windchill from vehicle speed could be a death sentence for the housing like you anticipate.

I was talking about it with the wife this morning. It was more me talking through the idea and her listening. She initially didn't like the idea of the mirror overlay and shut that down until I explained how it worked. It's her truck technically so mods have to either pass her smell test or at the very least be shrouded in BS to get her approval. She's actually pretty easy to convince if you approach it from the right angle. Psych 101. Haha.

I still lean towards the factory option if it's made available in a reasonable time and isn't insanely overpriced. While running the washer line would likely be the easiest part of the install, you could always omit that part and the jeep/camera would be none the wiser.

The first back up plan is what you posted. I would install it as a more permanent solution and hide the wiring. The positives are the price, video resolution, simultaneous dual screen operation and availability. The third would be the setup that interfaces with the uconnect. That needs extra parts on top of the camera kit and screen resolution is likely to be lower, but that may be different with the gladiator uconnect. I know in the older ones you use a cargo cam input and it's a 720 input.

In your experience. How well does the mirror cover stay put? Does it vibrate? Does the rear view mirror, when the screen is off, work well?

One of the nozzles on my 2016 Ram 2500 froze and broke. I had to pull the hood insulation and a pair of nozzles was $40 on ebay.

Trail cam is a $495 option at build. If they follow the same pricing structure as the steel winch bumper $695 at build includes skid, or $995 plus a skid through parts, I expect the trail cam kit to be $695ish, plus an hour @ dealer shop rate to flash the head unit. If you omit the washer it does less than the aftermarket camera does (records 1080)

The unit I linked attaches with two silicone rubber bands and comes with 2 extras. It is tight and does not move, and unless you are looking for it, basically isn't there. The mirror is very clean with no distortion edge to edge image is bright and clear, to move between the two cameras you swipe the screen left or right. You can pan the rear camera view up or down by swiping the screen up or down.

I hard wired it, and hid everything, it is a very clean installation. I wired the rear to the backup lights, so when you put it in reverse it selects the rear camera, and the guide lines come up (they are fixed straight and do not follow the steering).

All said it is a very impressive unit, at 3or 4 times the price, @$100ish it's a steal
Will accept up to a 64gb micro SD card. I think I answered all your questions but if not ask again.

ETA : the supplied rear camera mount is a POS, you will need some fab skills to mount it in the front for sure.
