@kevman65 yes my Pittsburgh ratchet broke on me after several uses. I was gifted the same mechanic set I previously purchased and the ratchet broke as well.

Basics have been pretty well covered. But there are things beyond basic that make more difficult tasks achievable to the home mechanic. Once you have your must-have tools, consider a tool-a-month purchase. During times when cash is a little short, purchase something small. In months when you have plenty to cover life's necessities and whatever else (income tax refund!), buy something larger. Have a plan to equip your dream shop with the tools you can use, and work towards that. And don't forget about storage (tool boxes) and work surfaces (benches, etc). Keep doing that and in a few years you'll have a nice work space (This photo is 12 years old. It's grown since then. My JK was even new, look at those wheels and the front bumper, LOL!) ...

The two most asked questions about that picture above: A 1979 Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Am, and a Starmaster 14.5" Dobsonian telescope.

And just to show how much that JK has changed ...

And don't forget a nice tool box. Great tools are of little use if they're scattered about or throws into a big box.

Surprisingly, the big, wheeled tool boxes at Harbor Freight are pretty nice and modestly priced. I've also seen some excellent tool box deals at Costco.

Don't skimp on jackstands. Get 12 tons. Torins 12ts are 108 a pair on amazon. Though smaller ones work heavier rated ones give you a wider base way safer.

I have milwaulkee stuff for impacts they work well. The m12 stubby is great for most stuff.

buy several, no less than 5 - 10mm sockets deep and shorty. Keep them in a locked drawer and ziptied to a brick until needed. Because you will one day open that drawer needing one and they all are gone. then you go for your backup. really, losing 10 millys is a genuine thing.
