Looking for some ideas to get some of my Gladiators bed back. Currently the spare tire is lying flat (40x13.5) with recovery gear and high lift jack mounted on molle panels (sides) with a tonneau covering it all. Looking to see how others are mounting larger tires that will not fit underneath.

Replace the tonneau cover with a cap. If you need a lot of room, put a roof rack on the cap and put the spare up there.

I have the same dilemma. Just enough room for a wheeling trip with no camping gear under the cover.

If I haul camping gear as well. I stand the tire up vertical for traveling with the tonneau cover rolled up. Then when wheeling I lay it flat and strapped to the front tie downs.

Motobilt does make a vertical universal tire carrier but it is expensive and still can't close a tonneau cover. I don't like the idea of mounting a 40" tire off the back bumper either.

What mount do you use to stand the tire up?

I haven't used a mount I just stood it up length wise against the wheel well and packed all the other camping stuff around it to hold it in place. I like the idea of the Motobilt one and they have pictures of it mounted in their new long bed replacement.

I don't normally carry the spare except for off roading trips. I also started carrying a 5ft 2x10 for loading the spare in the bed by myself if necessary. A 165lbs tire and wheel is not something I want to lift by myself.

I'm about to install the Maximus-3 sport / roll bar and their extruded aluminum plank cargo deck system, as a permanent solution for my 40 inch spare. Yes, I'll lose my soft tonneau cover [which I love] but looking forward to the trade-off. This will give me the full use of my bed back.
