First time post. Long time lurker... I paid a local shop to regear my Gladiator and I've put 5000K miles on it since then. I over tighten the pinion while installing an Adams 1350 rear shaft and chromoly axles. Decided to check the gear pattern (attached photos).

Based on the gear pattern, should I make shim adjustments when installing the new pinion crush sleeve and bearing? Or, leave the shims as is due to the wear pattern established?

The pattern looks a bit deep, but at 5K you don't want to make any adjustments, the pattern is already worn into the gears.

Is it making noise?

That's the coast side. Let's see the drive side.

But I agree with above...leave it. The pattern is worn in by now. Get your pinion preload correct but I wouldn't go messing with re-shimming.

Could this have been caused by me overtightening the pinion?

Thanks for the feedback. Drive and coast side pics below.

I think over-tightening the pinion has given you too much backlash now, judging by the irregular patterns on the gears. The pinion is marginally too deep but tightening it has pulled it away from the ring gear. If it's not howling then just roll with it. It's probably 99% fine.

For the record...I've never set up "Jeep" differentials. But I have set up about a bajillion drag race and circle track differentials. They are the same.

Thanks for your input. I'll be changing the pinion bearings and crush sleeve this weekend. Hopefully the pattern looks better when I'm done.

Use an in/lb dial or beam torque wrench to measure rotational drag of the pinion by itself and sneak up on the spec. I'm not sure what it'll be for your application but 14-15 in/lbs of rotational drag is probably in the ballpark.

Also FYI...rotational drag is the reading once you get the pinion turning. The steady drag as it turns. The force to get it moving will be higher but we're not reading that.

Can you provide me some input? I ended up regearing Gladiator. What do you think about this gear pattern?

I think it's really close. Hard to tell. Looks like the pinion might need to go deeper on both. Coast pattern looks pretty good.

What's the backlash at? What's the spec?
Also are you loading down the carrier when you spin it for a pattern? It needs to have some pretty stiff resistance to leave a solid pattern. Looks like maybe the backlash is a little loose or you didn't drag the carrier enough when testing.
