I think it's really close. Hard to tell. Looks like the pinion might need to go deeper on both. Coast pattern looks pretty good.

What's the backlash at? What's the spec?
Also are you loading down the carrier when you spin it for a pattern? It needs to have some pretty stiff resistance to leave a solid pattern. Looks like maybe the backlash is a little loose or you didn't drag the carrier enough when testing.
Greg, It calls for 6-10 backlash with the Yukon gears. I'm at 6. You are correct, I did not put any drag on the carrier.

Thanks for your help. Here's a pic with pressure on the carrier applied. Enjoy the remainder of your night.

Well sir I'd say you're damn close and if those were my gears I'd run em. Nice job. That's a pretty solid looking contact pattern.

Greg, Thank you for your advice. I can tell you've done this a couple of times. Enjoy your weekend.

Glad to help. Kudos to you for taking on such a job.

Make sure you follow the manufacturers break-in recommendations. After that...go crazy.

Sorry to hijack. I searched for threads mentioning “howling”, and found you folks who clearly know your gears. All of a sudden, at 68k total miles, but 56k with Dana 5.13’s on my rubicon, I get a really bad howling sound in 4hi auto above 35mph. Any expert thoughts? The front drive shaft looks fine, and has no visible damage. It rotates smoothly by hand. I have RCV shafts as well. They were out within the last 15k miles and looked perfect. Thanks. So I’m thinking either gears, failed bearing in the diff, or driveshaft.

In my experience, howling from the gears will happen right away if there's a problem with their installation. Gear noise won't wait tens of thousands of miles later UNLESS something else has gone wrong to disrupt the gear meshing. You could have a bearing gone south that is making noise and/or altered the ring and pinion contact. Gear howling has a unique sound that is more like an actual wolf howl as opposed to a whining roar that you'd typically hear from bearings. So...whatever the case...whines and howls suck to have and are often difficult to diagnose. Pop the diffs open and look for damage, look for metal in the fluid.

Yep. I’d say hearing without seeing it yet. Can’t really diagnose in 2 feet of snow. So it’ll need to wait until we move and I get to put it in a garage.
