That one doesn't have an RJ45 plug for mic unit. I'd like to have one so that I can utilize the Lasfit passthru and mount the radio body behind dash.
Forgot about that part. Always wondered what that jack was for on the lastfit panel

I'm new to radios. Is there a HAM radio that is remote mounted that has the screen on the hand unit and the hand unit has a RJ45 plug?
The Anytone D578UV III has an optional blueooth display mic that can also be used with an Ethernet cable. The optional display mic is the BT-01 and the radio can program amateur, commercial and GMRS frequencies in analog FM and DMR, although the radio is probably not FCC type accepted for GMRS. https://powerwerx.com/anytone-atd578uviiipro-dmr-mobile-radio-bluetooth

If your looking for something along the lines of the dual band Motorola APX7500 shown above with remote control head mic, the Harris XG-100M is an all band 30-870MHz transceiver that also takes a handheld remote control head and its a fraction of the cost of the dual band APX7500. I had an APX7500 VHF/UHF R1 and liked it a lot but sold it for enough to fund four Harris XG-100Ms.

Ya in the Jeep the O3 on the APX is perfect. My JK had a dual deck 7500 (v/8 and Ur1/Ur2) with an O7 head. It was nice but the head just took up space and never could find a nice location for it. Finally removed all of it when I moved south as its more of a trail rig now. When I did the JT I wanted to E5 head for viewing purposes but the O3 won out for space. If I go with a dual deck I'll need to go back to the E5 or O7 but think I'm good if my FTM ever comes back from Yaesu.

The remote head on my Harris XG-100M is about the size of a Motorola E5 and when I get a Harris handheld remote I'll probably put my FTM400 back in.

Does the XG-100M allow FPP?

Hey there -
I thought I'd share how I installed my FTM500DR amateur radio and Midland MXT-275 in my 2022 Gladiator.
Key parts:
  • GMRS: Midland MXT-275 with MXTA26 whip (NMO)
  • Amateur: FTM-500DR with Larsen dual band whip (NMO)
  • interior: (1) RAM Mounts Tough Track and various RAM parts, (2) A-Pillar Phone Holder Mount Stand (ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/254993122303 ) where I removed the phone bracket and replaced it with the Midland mic mount.
  • Exterior: AUXMART Lower Windshield Light Mounts
Details on GMRS
  • The radio is mounted under the dash on the horizontal metal bracket that is a few inches under the firewall hole everyone uses. The radio mounting bracket fits perfectly on the horizontal metal bar and the radio is easily inserted/removed.
  • The whip is on the passenger side light mount where one of the light holes was enlarged slightly so it would accept the NMO mount
  • I can hit repeaters over 50 miles away
Details on Ham
  • The body of the radio is mounted under the drivers seat at the rear end of the seat-adjusting bar
  • The Larsen whip is on the driver's side light mount, again I had to slightly increase the size of the existing hole so that the NMO mount would fit
  • I love this antenna - low swr on both bands, great range

What brackets are you using to mount lights and antenna? I am looking to do something similar and I like the looks of your brackets.

I love the setup. Do you worry at all about somebody smashing the window at night and ripping it out? I have my CB radio mounted down by the middle hump, and I take it out of the Jeep every night because I'm paranoid that somebody will take a look inside and think it's something valuable and break the window.

Thanks.
I have an old Alinco 2 meter rig that I'd like to put in my Gladiator. You just gave me a push to do it.

I worry about that, too, but my car spends most of its time in my driveway with a camera on it. When I park, I find front and center locations where a bad actor would be noticed. Also, it takes only about one minute to pop off all the holders, disconnect the Yaesu head, and remove the radar detector. My gear can be tucked away under the back seat very quickly.

I like the setup. Have you noticed any interference due to having the factory radio antenna that close to the GMRS antenna?
I checked that this weekend. On weaker FM broadcast signals I do hear the gain of the FM receiver cutting back while I'm transmitting, but not on the stronger radio stations. This is a common mobile radio antenna location for Jeeps, I haven't heard of anyone reporting any equipment issues.
