I'm personally the type to remove as much as it takes to have an easy time, rather than use 53 extensions and wobbles to jam my hands in upside down and backwards.
Dropped the trans crossmember to get more angle, the upper rad hose, and lifted the thing about 2-3 inches with the front tires off, made it pretty easy.
A large portion was through the fenders, that's why I had the tires off.Did you go through the fender? Easy to remove them and it was my first thought.
