There are a few small Items I use fairly regularly like small ratcheting tie down, gloves, and small hand tools that I keep under or behind the back seat. I always find myself wanting just a little more storage. I know people make a storage solution that goes into the tailgate, and that would probably be just the right size if I was willing \ able to cut open my tailgate which I do not want to do. I think if someone made a small storage box that went into the hitch it might be the perfect size. Most of it could be recessed so it was actually under the bumper. I have seen the large hitch mounted storage for smaller blowers or coolers but I am looking for something more like a small toolbox. Big enough to keep for small tow down straps, pair of gloves, screw driver, pliers and a flashlight. I figured someone must make this but I can’t find anything. If anyone has one or can send a link that would be great. Or any other ideas for additional storage please post.
Thanks
Chris

I run a ATV diamond plate box (it mounts behind the ATV seat to the haul rack)for that sort of storage and keep it in the bed, any that hangs below the bumper will be a goner soon, so that position is out. It’s lockable and was on sale at Cabelas.

What about a Packout mounting plate on the tailgate?

Personally I would not bother with hitch-mounting a box. Even with a little weight, they will tend to sag. Perhaps a better reason is you won't be able to judge as easily, how far to back up. Or how far out it sticks in a parking lot. Rear camera can help but how many of us study that every time we park? Even if your good about remembering to look every time, these these shelves or boxes extend the distance to reach over or a round the tailgate (if box not too tall) to put or retrieve things in/out of the bed. If you need more bed length, those full size pickups might be the right thing to have. But of course, a lot of us don't want that. So...

There are swing out boxes that fit along the side and at the end of the truck bed. Get one for the left, or the right side, or both. Most of your 5 ft beds is still available for other stuff. An over the rail tool box like many pickups have can work if right-sized for the JT but for what your asking to do, these in-bed, tucked along the. side between wheel well bumps and tailgate, would seem to be your perfect solution. Not too expensive, considering the hinge plate and box design. Get one now, and the other side later. Are you right handed? Then I would probably go for the driver side box first. Your convenience of fast need-use may vary and a left-hander might chose the passenger side box as their first go-to. Lots of places sell these.
