Has anyone had the problem on the tailgate? Everywhere else seems ok, just this spot I just noticed.

Well damnit. I just went out to check mine after I saw this post and sure enough, bubbling on my tailgate as well. I'm taking mine over tomorrow for the hood, so I may as well add this to the ticket.

I worked at a high end aircraft manufacturing company for a few decades. We had paint adhesion issues quite often. I had to troubleshoot and address the issues and found some interesting contributing factors. The obvious reasons are cleanliness correct paint / primer formulation / etching . Primer and paint thickness were a big factor in disbonding. The specs on the coatings were very specific on thickness. One issue I saw over and over was over spec thickness of coating at the edges of parts. Usually on the lower edge relative to gravity while coating is applied. Coatings naturally "pool" at these edges and accumulated over spec thickness specific to each coat/ material type. I ordered a small calibrated ultrasonic device to measure coating thickness in mills and sure enough many low side edges disbonding were over thick.

That’s very interesting !! I know back in the day we used zinc chromate primer and never had that many problems with aluminum panels. Then later we used epoxies. I remember rushing and putting paint on too thick, too fast you could get solvent popping so maybe something is feeding backwards ? This is definitely a different perspective ??

I did the computer networking for Cementech years ago. They made concrete handling equipment, pumps and more. They had military contracts and their VP showed me around one afternoon and talked about that exact topic - how the military specs called for exacting paint thickness and so on. I can relate based on what I learned from them. The paint was critical (as were most other things, of course). It wasn't just to make it look military.

I've powder coated a lot of parts from cast iron to steel to various aluminums and so on - maybe Jeep should start powder coating our trucks.

OTOH, the aluminum bumpers on my little SX4 hold paint perfectly. The factory paint was chipped from abuse, but when I restored the car, I went to the shop that sprayed the final color and clear for me after I did all the prep, and they gave me the paint and such to do the bumpers. That was about 2013 and to this day, that paint is stuck solid.

Dammit sometimes the forums just cause your car to break down.

When I saw all the fuss about the aux battery, I started looking into it and sure enough mine died like the next day. Deleted that battery and all is well.

Read this thread today and thought oh lemme check...uh mistake. Found a little bit of bubbling on the edge of the hood in one spot that I can find.

Anyone know if the warranty is still good for paint on a 3 year, 2 month old Glady?

My 21 had corrosion on the tailgate. Nearby dealer that has done the service work on all 4 of my Jeeps told me to get in line....expected date in 2026 because I didn't buy it from them. So much for customer loyalty.

Went back to original dealer. Had an appointment 3 weeks out, had the truck in the shop for a week, provided a loaner and the finished product looks great.
