Being completely new to off-roading I was wondering how capable my sport S is. The only modifications I have made are swapped out stock tires with 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks. I have also added the stock overland running boards which I have a feeling may hamper any off-roading. I’m not looking to do anything crazy at all. Just have a little fun on some easy trails.

While I've never off-roaded a stock gladiator sport, having experience with everything from YJ to XJ to JK and even a KJ Liberty, I can confidently say you'll be able to go just about anywhere you want to in a Gladiator with those tires on it. Wouldn't hurt to throw a spacer lift on if you don't want anything crazy, just to get more tire travel, but on easy trails you'll still have one of the most capable vehicles out there

The "Overland Sidesteps" might hamper you slightly but might protect the rocker areas more than nothing. Now on Off-roading is what a Jeep that was built for. Off-road use within reason from base model to top each has its area of best performance... None of them are really hwy or I-State prime vehicle other than Grand Cherokee's. ?
There's a thread on here somewhere about how tuff the Overland sidesteps turned out to be.

Depends on where you are and what terrain. I also first went "off roading" on a mostly stock Sport (Max Tow obligatory). I was actually on some smaller tires: 255/75/17, which are 31.5" actual measured diameter. I went on trails like the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway and the Kentucky Adventure Tour, see vids online of folks doing it. I even saw a stock 2dr JL on factory tires (bridgestone ATs) do ok, slipped in the mud alot and couldn't make it through one part, had to be yanked.

You're "light off roading" may not be the same as others. Likewise, what I consider a "hard trail" would be called a "moderate" trail by the local Land Cruiser club.

I have learned the biggest advantage to off roading is tread, not lift.

I slid into a rock with my Overland steps and punctured them. Not terrible damage, but they ended up being replaced with some JLU rock rails (10lbs lighter than the JTR rails and cover almost as much).

I actually just went for some trail rides with my 2 little boys in my sport s this past weekend. First time off roading with my gladiator that I got a couple of months ago. Only thing I have done is changed out the stock wheels and upgraded tires to some 295 70 r17 milestar Patagonia’s and put some rubicon rock sliders on it. I was very surprised how this thing handled. It was my first time going out and while I didn’t get into anything too crazy there was definitely a trail with some deep sand, decent mud puddles and some uphill climbs that I will admit I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to make it to the end haha but this thing went right through it all with ease. And after that I went on a few trails that were mostly sand with rocks. It was super fun. But the next days cleanup.... not so fun haha but enjoy man and trust me the gladiator is very capable even if it’s not a rubicon lol.

I have a stock sport s Max tow. It's done very well on forest roads and in the snow. I'll link my YouTube page where you can find my off-roading videos.
