NPS? I thought it was now ok to destroy this stuff, they should have dumped red paint on it and sprayed graffiti on it there would be no charges

What they did wasn't necessarily malicious.

They got stuck. It happens.

Make the stupid hurt a little financially and send them on their way the wiser-- Maybe they'll learn a bit about properly off roading in the process. Guarantee they'll never do it again.
Looks to me like sheer stupidity, and perhaps a bit of selfishness involved - call it "attitude" - being where they were to begin with, and inexperience.
i say inexperience because while I don't agree with using that at all, if you connect at the very base, there's less chance of any damage. Connect low, then you have less leverage to break something you are attached to.

If you are going to be stupid, at least be smart about it.

I'm not in a position or location for off-roading, and I'm too far away from a lot of things to help take care of them cleanup, that sort of thing, so......... while I may not end up trading vehicles this year, I decided to do the Tread Lightly thing anyway.

If responsible people don't speak up and call out some of this crap, then responsible people will lose it all.

A friend of mine used to go out on the river trails and such in groups and pick up garbage and clean up after the idiots that camped or fished or whatever. (he was a good friend in high school)
He took amazing wildlife photos and did photo-journals of their cleanup efforts.
I'd not heard from him in years and asked someone in my home town - what happened to Brent - even on the historical stuff, you don't see him post much any more - really bad health, and cancer battle.
Makes me want to find out what groups he worked with and give them some donation - and if their efforts were in or around Iowa, maybe pitch in.

Awful. Couldn’t agree more. I constantly tell people I see off trail. It doesn’t usually get well received, but screw it.
