Hi,

I have a 2023 with the factory LED headlights, fog lights, running lights, but Halogen tail lights (seriously, how cheap is THAT option!?!?!) If I get aftermarket LED tail lights, will they be plug-and-play, or will I need to reconfigure/program the controller to work with LED tail lights?

Details: I tried going the easy route by installing LED bulbs into the halogen tail housings. No luck. Well, they worked. Actually they worked 95% of the time. But I occasionally got a dash error for the right rear tail light, and it sometimes did the rapid blinking for the turn signal. Annoying. So I put the halogen bulbs back in. (To be precise, for posterity: I put the halogen bulbs back in for the brake/turn signals; I kept the cheap Amazon white LED for my reverse light. They work and have no errors!)

So annoying.

There are some LED bulbs on Amazon that say they are CANBUS compatible AND have the built in resistor, but they are $30 and after getting other LEDs to test, I figure I will just get some aftermarket LED tail lights. The red LED I tested did say CANBUS compatible but that's not 100%. Also, I don't want to wire in a resistor and test. If I go to the (small) trouble of new wiring, I'd rather get new LED tail lights altogether.

I read about some programming options where you can set the LED mode to 'on'. Since I have the Factory LED headlights/fog/DRL, would I still need to reprogram for LED when I get some aftermarket LED tail lights, or do you think they would 'just work'?

Thanks. I have read quite a bit but would like some expert advice. It is a new Jeep to me, and when you get a new vehicle, you know how you are overwhelmed with new information and options compared to your previous car.

Long term, I am probably getting a Tazer or one of the other solutions like OBDLink MX+ and JScan or AlfaOBD, but for now, with a new truck and already doing mods, just swapping out the tail lights would be much appreciated vs. having to do some OBD stuff.

Your thoughts?

Thank you!

If you replace your Halegen lights with LEDs, then yes reprogramming is needed unless you use a resistor which may come with the new lights. There is a separate setting when using the Tazer for LED headlights, DRLs, Fogs and Tails.

Mine also had the LED headlights, DRLs and fogs, but halogen taillights. I swapped my taillights out with some stock LEDs and didn’t have any issues not using a programmer.

I was given some LED tail light bulbs (I don't remember the brand) that had the built in resistor and were supposedly CANBUS compatible. They hyper flashed and the dash indicated bulb problems anyway. And they got hot as blazes.

I will be getting a programmer and then use normal non resistor LED bulbs. Just waiting for warm weather.

wanted to do other projects in the future. I reprogrammed and have had no problems at all with my new taillights.

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but why does anyone care about the rear tail lights being halogen or LCD? My Gladiator Rubicon has the LCD lights on the front which are definitely a plus. But what benefit are they on the rear? Do they last longer for the additional cost?

I have never seen LCD lights. LCD is a Liquid Crystal Display. Do you mean LED, Light Emitting Diode? LEDs are usually a whiter and brighter light, draw less current and last longer over Incandescent or Halogens.

I stand corrected. Yes, LED, not LCD. I was just wondering what the advantage is to the rear LED's since you never really see them. Thanks for the information.

Many LED taillights comes with resistors, if needed and you are unable to change the settings.
You can also just buy the resistors from Amazon like these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B73ZPJ38?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1

They are relatively inexpensive, I had to use these on my Wife's BMW reverse lights.

Did you look into the Oracle Reverse lights? Flyboy2109 has a picture of them installed. These reverse light are awesome. If you live in the USA, you can point the rear north and light up Canada!

Beyond liking the look, my nieghbor says by back up lights are brighter than my headlights!

I thought the halogen 'mouse ears' looked cheap on my nice Jeep.
