Hello fellow Jeepers,

I just purchased an AJK Offroad Hitch Skid Plate w/ recovery point. They have two options, a standard and a short. I opted for the short in order to accommodate my 37" spare tire.

I'm not a painter ... I do ok with DIY projects but I really want to get this right.

I have read the manufacturers instructions and have a general knowledge of how to spray paint.
BUT
This stuff is a little special... in the way of it being a Polyurethane Aerosol with 316L Stainless Steel Flake.
The manufacturer recommends Grit Blasting or #36 grit paper to prep the surface. Two coats are recommended.

I am hoping some of you that have successfully applied STEEL-IT can provide me with some insight and guidance.
What did you do ? What technique did you use ?
Lets see the pics !

I appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks

I wiped my off with acetone. Did 3 light coats of etching primer. Then did two coats of bed liner spray paint. It came out fine. Sorry no pick.

I will take a look at the etching primer... I wasn't sure if it really needed it or not since it is Polyurethane.

Do you have the same skid plate ? If so, how do you like it ?

Yes I have the same one. It works as advertised. Had to repaint the bottom several times? I do like it because it’s so wide, does not sink in

Cool, sounds like it will be a solid mod. Due to it's potential to get scuffed up, that is why I didn't opt for the additional cost of powder coating... but then I spent almost $40 on a can of spray paint.. haha .. go figure.
But
I figured it would be easier to touch up than spraying over the powder coating.

This is what the manufacturer said about primer:

DO I HAVE TO USE STEEL-IT'S PRIMER? CAN'T I USE A MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE SHOP PRIMER?

  • Yes, it may work. However, unlike the case with many primers in the marketplace, STEEL-IT primers are not designed to enhance adhesion to the substrate, but are, in their own right, high performance anticorrosion coatings that contain, in addition to anticorrosive materials, the same 316L stainless steel micro flake used in STEEL-IT topcoats. Thus STEEL-IT primers form a critical part of providing the maximum protection against corrosion, chemicals, abrasion, impact, temperature cycling, and other harsh conditions.

The poor mans coating is just a thick layer of lanolin followed by the dust it collects.

This is Steel-it over a bare motobilt diff cover. It's been fine for over two years now. I chipped it either swapping out my track bar or when I re-geared. Might get around to touching it up... some day. I spray it heavy first pass and let it dry for 8-ish hours then hit it with a lighter coat.
