Having busted trails for nearly 60 years, the further I go into belly of the beast, the tougher the trails the fewer vehicles I see until what time it's nothing but SWB Jeeps. The SWB Jeep was built to tackle the world and it has. One of the worst mistakes the military made was dropping the Jeep, everything they have tried to replace it has never lived up to the job...
I remember one time we were wheeling out in Disney OK, you may know the place, where Viagra is at. We were wheeling a mixed bag of TJs and JK/JKUs, and an old FJ40, and two Hummers asked if they could join. Both suffered mechanical failures before the day was out.

I have broken parts on my Jeep and made it home where I had no business doing so, and followed many a fellow jeeper on such a ride back. They are tougher than people know.

YEP, wheeled Disney. IF you do not bust a radiator or have complete driveline failure the chances of getting off the trail and back to the trailhead are on your side if you are in a Jeep.

So I am in Moab, leading a week-long set of runs on some of the toughest challenges in Moab. Its our last day and I take them on Pritchett Canyon, One of the Jeeps has a catastrophic failure of the U bolts that hold his axle-leaf springs. It was undrivable. I had been carrying around in my Jeep for several years some Mil-Spec Ties that are used on Tanks when they are built to hold stuff down. I knew a guy who worked at Tank Command as a mech and he gave me some.

THose 2 Nylon Ties got him back to the trailhead and it was not easy. There are no bypasses so I had to put him in line behind me (the leader) so I could strap him. PC is noted as on of the most difficult trails around anywhere. So not only am I having tun PC, but I am pulling another jeep behind me and albeit he is helping, he cannot do anything that would put a hard vertical load on that axle-leaf spring. Thank goodness I had supercharged my engine I really got into it on that extraction.

But the mutt... you could change the tire without a jack and if you exceeded the speed limit everyone died instantly.

Or the mule or the gamma goat...

I fully understand why the Jeep was as handy and functional as it was and why it was eclipsed in mil-spec service. And yes the deeper you go and the hairier it gets I expect to see pretty much two things; a CJ and a SC3800 swapped early samurai.

Now for giggles Doug DeMuro took his Range Rover on some trails and it did get through but the trails didn’t look especially nasty or challenging but he did it. Some other chuckle head off roaded their Tesla.

Using the metrics provided, the Tesla offers far superior mileage than any wrangler and the Range Rover is far more powerful and luxurious so obviously both are far better off roaders, using the logic of the article.

Where does the spare fuel tank bolt onto that Tesla thing? .........BWAHAHAHA!

My head hurts trying to read the Colorado section. I don’t think a single sentence made it out of grade school.

Also, FJs have three wipers??

As an FJ owner I can tell you that they really do have 3 wipers.
I’ve seen thousands of these and not once did I notice. Crazy! I guess the short but wide windshield?

Like old Mercedes L-Klasse trucks. Funny I never noticed it either.
