Lately it seems like my backup cam is really blurry, both in general and especially compared to the trail cam. It didn’t happen overnight, but seems to have gradually degraded over the past 6 months or so. I know a picture of a screen is never that great, but how does this compare to others?

That is some crisp high frequency detail along that crack edge. License plate light lines look pretty well defined as well.

Tree canopy in the back looks out of focus but looks like sun is setting behind them.

Am I correct that intense light, like sun or headlights, will distort cameras? I know every digital camera I've had, including my phone, doesn't do worth a crap if I'm facing sunlight.

Anyway, mine is fine - except under some conditions the license plate light light causes parts of things to be out of focus - as if the light is making it lose the ability to focus. Makes the lens look foggy.

The back-up camera is a fixed-focus, wide angle lens.
In reduced light, the depth of field (the in-focus part of the image) will be reduced.
The only time mine is somewhat blurry is when it needs to be cleaned...

What needs to be clear is clear. I don't need to see what's 100 feet away. I need to see what's one foot away.
As for facing harsh or the sun, I have several cameras that digitally place a black dot over the sun when facing directly into it, and still capture surrounding areas perfectly.
Even a super cheap Go Pro knock off does it wonderfully, and it's 8 years old. So the technology exists.

hard to tell. Looks a little off. Mine is clear. I had the JT in the shop and they gave me the dang '23 renegade as a loaner, the backup was terrible, made me appreciate how crisp ours is

When I got my 2020 JT I was totally amazed at how much better the back up cam display was than our Grand Cherokee. My wife traded her 18 for 21 and my JT's camera display was STILL better. The color is a lot better. The GC cam color was off - I believe you'd call it the saturation - the red was so intense it looked artificial, for example.

Mine is excatly how yours is. I have tried to research how to focus it, and had no luck so far. It is annoying how clear my front camera is and blurry my rear cam is.

Very fair points, I didn't pick the greatest time of day to compare, but had a few minutes during my son's football practice. The picture may be a little worse in the examples than usual, but even mid-day with great lighting it's so blurry it's tough to make out the make/model of car in the parking space across. I just wish the backup could be more like the trail cam. It works well enough to use, but think I'll have the dealership take a look next time I'm in.

Compared to a handful of rentals of various makes the gladiator backup cam has been the best so far, there are some unforgivably bad ones out there.

I'd say other than it being dirty all the time the rear camera is crystal clear. Your lens might be defective.

So mine is weird, it's definitely blurrier/not as sharp when it's hot weather. If it sits a while on a hot day, it will be noticeably blurrier than normal and looks a bit off. Once it cools down some, or in cooler weather, it's one of the sharpest best pictures I've ever had on a vehicle.
