Is there an argument for a naked bed?

I can't wrap my head around why a pick up truck's bed would ever be painted, and the fact that a protective "spray in bedliner" is an additional option. Those tough bedliners that can take a beating should be the standard, and then getting a body color bed is the upgrade, much like it is for the hardtop.

To me, the bed is a tool. I wouldn't put a fancy paint job on the head of my hammer. You swing at one nail, and there goes your paint job on the hammer.

So I don't get it. Is there an argument the other way? Why would you WANT a body color bed?

You said to YOU, the bed is just a tool. However, not every pickup truck is "work" truck, a simple non-emotional tool (like a hammer) that spends its life hauling lumber and gravel every day, and has no value outside its standard utility.

Unless you think that people should only use their vehicles in ways of which YOU approve? Apparently, this is the case, since you go on to say that anyone who doesn't use a JT in YOUR way should buy something else.

I put a "Bed Rug" in mine, I like to haul "stuff" in the bed, (that is why I bought a JT). I have a bed cover to keep that "stuff" from flying out. The bed is a tool, but like my other tools, I try to take care of it. Besides it looks finished that way. (IMHO)

Not so sure I agree with the whole “bed scratches” theory you got going there. A bed is a place to haul shit. What kind of shit? That varies person to person. I have a beat up ass 2500 long bed Chevrolet to haul tons of gravel, firewood, and shit like that in. I’m not interested in f***ing up the bed of my JT if I can help it. I had my bed sprayed with LineX being there is a chance I’ll haul loads of rock, tools, lumber, etc in my JT.

As far as buying a JLU, having a bed is so much easier for accessing whatever shit you’re hauling. Plus, I can add a bed cover and your shit is safe from the elements just like in a JLU.

Thing is a painted surface like that is going to eventually scratch from groceries, bags, etc. Even if you are not hauling lumber regular use items are going to scratch it. I do find it strange to see a truck without it. JT is my first truck, I was kind of shocked that the liner was not a standard part of every truck since I usually see it on everything but old ones.

I'm just looking for examples of how people use a painted truck bed.

My side of the argument is that I wouldn't slide a plastic cooler across the hood of my truck. So it doesn't seem practical to me to have my bed painted the same way my hood was painted.

That's all. I approve of however you use your painted truck bed. Just tell me how exactly you do.

If you are not putting scratches on the bed, then you are not using the bed. If you are not using the bed, then you should have bought a JLU.

I don't think it has anything to do with buyers out there specifically wanting it body color, moreso that most people want the liner and thus Jeep chose to charge them for it.

Others might have sought out or ordered it without the liner in order to line it themselves.

A much smaller segment probably ordered it without the liner because they didn't care if their bed was scratched up.

Using your own logic, why did you pay Jeep hundreds of dollars to coat your bed if it is indeed just a tool meant to be beat up?

You essentially said if you aren’t scratching your bed you should not have a JT and should have bought a JLU. There are far more reasons to have a JT over a JLU than hailing shit that scratches your bed. I agree that a LineX is awesome protection, but if you will NEVER use LineX because you will never haul anything that will scratch your bed that is no reason not to have a JT.

That makes more sense. Why paint and not an alternative coating such as LineX?....

I can see that. However, for a cost perspective it adds another link to the manufacturing/assembly line process. Painting is already there, so probably why it’s used. Adding a LineX, or alternative, stop on the assembly line is probably not worth the extra cost to anyone. Plus, more $$ can be had by making the alternative coating an add-on.

Maybe it's just social engineering, but I think a scratched up lineX bed looks better than scratched paint. It's something with there being a separation in material. The paint should look good in my mind. Anytime I see scratched paint I'm forced to think that it looks bad. Where lineX almost gives permission for a scratch.

I haven't scratched up my painted bed yet but I'm still using it as a truck (ok, I did add a rubber mat - mostly to keep things from sliding around). I don't think my Baja would have fit well in a JLU.

Having had pickups before, I find the bedliners an annoyance. I like the color my truck is, I like how accessible the tie-downs are, it suits me to have a bare bed. I put a nice thick rubber mat in so heavy stuff doesn't ding the bottom, but a scratch is nothing. Hell, I've got scratches on the outside paint at this point, use is not abuse.
